We support people every day who are homeless or who are at risk of homelessness. Sadly, we know first-hand that substance use and mental ill-health are common when someone is trying to survive without the security of a home. Whether people are using substances to help them cope with the challenges of sleeping rough or experiencing mental ill-health after losing their home, many of these support needs are rooted in homelessness. Our new report also demonstrates that good data helps local authorities plan the right support so that people can move on with their lives. I recently learned about the challenges faced by some of our First Responders who are experiencing homelessness or inadequate housing. They are living in shelters, vehicles, or relying on friends and family for a place to stay. The stigma attached to homelessness is comparable to that of having a mental illness. I wonder if other departments/agencies are aware of the extent of this issue and what actions they are taking. It's crucial to address these challenges and support our First Responders in need. By raising awareness, we can uncover potential resources to provide the necessary assistance. #supportforhomelessfirstresponders

📢 It's National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week! At Dave’s House, we’re on a mission to provide safe, permanent supportive housing for adults with disabilities and serious mental illness. 🏠 🔹 Why Housing Matters: Many people living with mental illness face a cycle of homelessness and hunger that makes healing nearly impossible. An affordable home is the first step in breaking this cycle—offering individuals a place to recover, find stability, and thrive. 🔹 Our Impact: With a place to call home, our residents experience improved mental and physical well-being, a stronger sense of community, and access to the support they need. Together, we’re building more than just houses; we’re creating life-long stability and resilience. Let’s unite to end homelessness for our neighbors in need. Join us in creating lasting change! 💙 https://lnkd.in/d9etCRES #NationalHungerAndHomelessnessAwarenessWeek #DavesHouse #PermanentSupportiveHousing #MentalHealth #endinghomelessness #transforminglives #openingdoors

There is a misconception that homelessness is driven by substance use, mental health, and other individual-level factors. However, the truth is that the most important root causes of the homelessness crisis is the local housing market. "Reflecting on a topic close to my heart today: homelessness. It's a complex issue with deep-rooted causes, from economic disparities to mental health struggles and systemic inequalities. As we navigate our communities, it's crucial to remember the faces behind the statistics and extend compassion and support. Every individual deserves a safe place to call home, yet millions worldwide face the harsh reality of homelessness. It's a stark reminder of the work we have yet to do in creating inclusive societies where everyone has access to basic necessities. But amidst the challenges, there's hope. Organizations, advocates, and individuals are tirelessly working to provide shelter, support services, and pathways to stability. Each act of kindness, big or small, makes a difference. Let's continue the conversation, raise awareness, and take meaningful action to address homelessness. Together, we can build a future where everyone has a place to belong. #EndHomelessness #CommunitySupport #SocialJustice"

Today we are launching the first in our series of myth busters. There are so many misconceptions about homelessness - and that's ok, and it's normal - it's just not talked about enough for people to learn about the causes, nuances and stories of those you might walk by on the street. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀? Around half of cases are due to a relationship breakdown and according to Big Issue, it is the most common reason in the UK. Often the end of a relationship brings about other challenges such as the loss of a job, access to children or mental health struggles. The emotions associated with this type of situation, especially when impacting someone who is already vulnerable, can turn life upside down. It may also lead to the loss of an existing support network of friendship groups and family, leading to people feeling isolated and disconnected. It can be overwhelming with the situation often occurring quickly or unexpectedly. Support services will often be engaged to assess the severity of the situation, and whilst that process itself can be upsetting and complex, a range of services are available to those who find themselves homeless through a relationship breakdown. Whilst some people are unable to make safe or practical choices, largely homelessness is driven by circumstances such as the loss of a job or relationship, domestic violence, mental illness, depression, PTSD or trauma. (source: Homeless Hub). Soon we'll be creating a blog and answers booklet for all of our myth busters on our website so watch this space. Got a question? We'd love to share our thoughts and help to teach people more about homelessness. 📸 Zakia spreading the word at a Travel Massive event. #homelessness #socialenterprise #invisiblecities

Criminalizing homelessness only serves to deepen the marginalization and stigma faced by already vulnerable individuals. Instead of addressing the root causes such as affordable housing and mental health support, this punitive approach perpetuates a cycle of punishment and discrimination. It does not provide long-term solutions or support for those in need, further isolating them on the fringes of society. What is truly needed are compassionate and holistic approaches to homelessness, focusing on understanding and support rather than punitive measures.
