Last month, our CPO, Chanmeet, had the privilege of attending the Stakeholder Meeting 2024 in Berlin, hosted by the Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative (SASI), an effort by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the German agency for international cooperation (GiZ). This impactful two-day event convened over 120 representatives from business, academia, civil society, and politics to tackle the critical challenges and opportunities in building sustainable agricultural supply chains. The event focused on the implications of emerging EU regulations, their effects, and the path forward for sustainable agriculture. As part of our collaboration with the #MiCacao Project, Open Food Chain actively participated to address key issues in global agriculture. Our engagement at SASI focused on pivotal topics, such as: ✅ Creating deforestation-free supply chains focused on the implications of EU environmental regulations, including EUDR and #CSRD ✅ Ensuring fair living incomes for farmers ✅ Leveraging digitalization to enable transparent and efficient systems We are thrilled to collaborate with the Micacao Project in our mission to enhance traceability within the food industry and empower smallholder farmers and cooperatives to achieve EUDR compliance. If you would like to learn how Open Food Chain can help your business achieve #EUDR compliance, contact us today! 📗 Weekend reading 📗 UEF #CECE researcher Subhanjan Sengupta together with Prof Sonal Choudhary from the University of York, Raymond Obayi from The University of Manchester, and Rakesh Nayak from University of Roehampton, has recently published a study on reducing food loss and waste in post-harvest supply chain. This four-year qualitative research study offers the following findings: - Different value losses due to food loss in post-harvest supply chains: production value, intrinsic value, extrinsic value, market value, institutional value and future food value. - Strategies for moving from the loss-incurring current business model to a networked and sustainable business model: redefining ownership as stewardship, strengthening formal and informal beneficiary identification, strengthening value addition, and building capacities for empowering communities to benefit from innovation initiatives. - Propositions for future research on aligning agri-innovation systems with a networked and sustainable business model. A highly recommended read for anyone interested in ‘reducing’ as one of the first strategies in combating resource waste, which in this case is through the integration of innovation initiatives and sustainable business model for reducing food loss and waste. Today’s food for thought is “Report on ASEAN Food Systems Sustainability”, published by CropLife Asia and EU-ASEAN Business Council in 2024. The ASEAN Food Systems Sustainability Workshop in November 2023 discussed the challenges of applying the EU's strict agricultural regulations to ASEAN. The workshop emphasised that sustainability in agriculture must align with each country's goals for food security and development. Concerns were raised about the EU Green Deal's potential negative impact on ASEAN farmers, particularly regarding access to agricultural innovation and trade. Instead, ASEAN stakeholders supported a more flexible approach that focuses on continuous improvement and collaboration, similar to Japan's MIDORI Strategy, which balances sustainability with national development goals.
