Diversity in dermatology research: A crucial step towards equitable healthcare 🔬 A recent Australian analysis highlights a critical gap in dermatological studies: - Historical bias towards European ancestry in dermatology datasets - Underrepresentation of skin of color (SOC) in clinical trials and research - Only 4% of participants in a major melanoma study were from SOC, vs. 30% in the general Australian population - Unique manifestations and risk factors for melanoma in SOC remain understudied Key takeaway: Active engagement of people with SOC in research is essential for developing accurate diagnostic tools and improving mortality outcomes across all skin types. As someone deeply invested in the field of skincare and haircare, the recent findings presented at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) 2024 Annual Meeting regarding alopecia treatment, evoked a sense of concern in me. The studies on inhibitors of Janus kinases (JAKs) showcased promising results, offering hope for those with severe forms of alopecia. Particularly intriguing was the study on brepocitinib for cicatricial alopecia (CA), which not only demonstrated clinically meaningful hair regrowth but also provided insights into patient response based on biomarker changes. Dr. Emma Guttman-Yassky's commentary on the breakthrough potential of the CA study resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of understanding mechanisms of action and identifying optimal treatments for patients. We're proud to share insights from our independent report evaluating AI's role in Dermatology, developed for NHS England. Amidst an 82% surge in waiting lists and a doubling of skin cancer referrals, our July 2024 review reveals how AI holds considerable promise for the NHS. We examined real-world data, analysing over 33,000 lesions assessed by DERM, an AIaMD by Skin Analytics (the only one currently extensively in use in the NHS and with sufficient regulatory approvals to operate autonomously). Through a semi-systematic meta-analysis we determined that AI could match the diagnostic ability of in-person dermatology consultations. This holds potential for prioritising urgent cases, optimising referral processes and offering system savings. Our report takes a critical look at the clinical, operational, and economic implications of AI in Dermatology and underscores the need for robust post-market surveillance to ensure AIaMD's safe and effective use.
