An international research team, co-led by Hesham Sadek, MD, PhD, director of the Sarver Heart Center, has discovered that around 25% of patients with artificial hearts can regenerate heart muscle after a heart attack. While heart failure remains incurable, medications can slow its progression, and the only available treatment for advanced heart failure — aside from a transplant — is the use of an artificial heart, known as a left ventricular assist device, which helps the heart pump blood. “This is the strongest evidence we have, so far, that human heart muscle cells can actually regenerate — which really is exciting, because it solidifies the notion that there is an intrinsic capacity of the human heart to regenerate,” Dr. Sadek said. For him, exploring the complexities of the heart is not only a scientific pursuit but a deeply personal mission. To learn more about this research and Dr. Sadek: https://bit.ly/3VSgL35
