More life and business lessons from running up and down hills... I ran the 55th OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) at the weekend, in Glen Artney in Perthshire, Scotland, with a running partner, James Fraser. It's a two-day, carry-everything, orienteering race over the mountains, with a time limit of 6 hours on the first day and five hours on the second day. 1. Run with someone faster that you - they will make you lift your game! 2. If it is a race, keep your eyes on the prize: Don't be tempted to go off track to take in the views, but instead crack on to achieve your target! 3. Work out how to win within the rules. We had the option of climbing a mountain to gain some points, but worked out that keeping to the lowlands would bring more benefits - We did the least we could to succeed (in terms of height gained per point). 4. On the second day of the two-day race, we would have liked to have seen some more of beautiful Scotland, but we worked out that the race planner had clustered points in the same area as the first day. We swallowed our pride (another way of saying that we avoided the 'sunk-cost fallacy') and went and collected them again, doing a startlingly similar route to the first day. We finished that second day 20th of 186 teams - a fantastic result (especially since I'm a venerable 58). 5. We were acutely aware of the harsh penalties of being late - and we made sure that we finished on time. Learn from your mistakes (last time we did one of these, we had ALL of our points taken away for being late!) We finished in the top third overall, and I made the video attached.
