Small actions can save countless lives. This story is proof of the impact one person can have. American expat Rick Brown has been making waves in Pattaya, Thailand, by distributing free helmets to children and adults. With the support of local donors, the Cajun Life Cafe, and Pattaya police, his mission tackles the critical issue of unprotected motorcycle riding among children—a widespread safety concern. In just two years, Rick’s self-funded initiative has gained incredible momentum, with his online videos reaching over one million views. His dedication to promoting safety and protecting children goes beyond generosity—it’s a reminder of the positive change expats can bring to their communities. When expats lead with empathy, everyone benefits. What’s an initiative you’ve seen or supported that made a difference? What can we do?
It is a rare time, when I claim a space as Manutaki - Missioner to speak directly to our nation. This moment, today is one of those. As of 1 July 2024, the Mission will be reducing by more than half, the amount of food we distribute to those who have no other choice but to come to us to ask for help. We have pleaded with government for help. That help has not come. Today we ask you, New Zealand to see the reality of food insecurity in our midst. To see the depth of suffering in our city, and the indignity and harm that comes from not having enough to eat. It is appalling that we now face the prospect of turning people away at a time of such sustained and extraordinary need. #FundingCutsCutPotential #FoodForThought

Far from unique to New Zealand! Since the pandemic and subsequent declines in economic opportunities for the “average” worker, many families find themselves in dire straits. AI seems to be proposed as a way to reduce employment opportunities in many industries. This comes at a huge societal cost if not carefully managed. Bad actors are also using AI to create yet more devious schemes that extort money from those who cannot afford the diversion of their resources. This Brave New World we find ourselves in requires some radical new thinking to develop solutions. Governments and individuals need to be asking what else can I and we do to show more compassion to those in need. What else can I/we do to help civilization move forward? Do not ask what can I do to line my pockets at the expense of others, but ask what can I do to address the inequality and inequity that are so rampant in modern society. As George Orwell warned in “1984”, all men are created equal but some are more equal than others. That kind of thinking is not what the world needs now.

Wondering how to implement ethical storytelling into your fundraising? Here is a super simple and really interesting way, as demonstrated by ShelterBox They have started taking their fundraising materials back to the poeple who feature in them and asking for their feedback. They then change those materials before using them again, and they use the information to help future campaigns. I've been advising them on this process for some time while they trialled it in Cameroon, and I am delighted to see them taking it into other locations. Simple, effective, super interesting and all about listening to the people who know best about their own stories, nice one Shelterbox. https://lnkd.in/eimt4QsQ

My 'Farm' property will be Listed, in 3 more months.. It is so breathtaking, I expect a Bidder's War on it's sale.. As a now 78 year old, extremely healthy man (and wife), I am relocating (definately) to China.. China's aknowledgement of it's growing SENIORS population, has meant the creation of many Social 'Safety Nets' for them (and myself, when I get my Permanent Residence Card, within 45 days of arrival).. This new initiative is an extremely welcome one for it's Senior populations.. "Meals" for less than $2 CDN.. https://lnkd.in/gv75DguE

What color water do many people have to drink? As Charity Water says, "The answer is (not always) clear. From neon green to vaguely maroon to classic beige, we’ve seen dirty water in every shade imaginable–and never want to see someone drink it again." Please look at this interactive article to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gy3MsTN9 This article illustrates how contaminated water affects people's health, income, time, and opportunities, impacting one in ten individuals globally. Taskforce Kiwi is continuing to assess the evolving situation in Vanuatu, seeking out opportunities to support as the impact of Tuesday’s earthquake becomes increasingly clear. Over the last 96 hours we’ve engaged with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade around several immediate response options, particularly around communications and water purification, however it appears that these needs are being met on the ground by local resources, which is certainly positive news. Our focus now turns to supporting the initial and ongoing recovery operation, an aspect of disaster relief often overlooked. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Taskforce Kiwi are currently engaging with local contacts to identify where we can provide longer term support on the ground, very much like we did earlier in 2024 during our Cyclone Lola impact assessments operations across Vanuatu. Every single member of Taskforce Kiwi is a volunteer, but we can’t deploy our teams without your help. The International Day of the Seafarer is celebrated annually on June 25th to recognize the invaluable contributions of seafarers to the world economy and society. Seafarers are responsible for transporting almost 90% of global trade, often facing risks and personal costs while at sea. The day aims to bring attention to issues affecting seafarers' work and lives, such as piracy, and calls on governments and private companies to ensure fair treatment and proper facilities for seafarers. Activities to commemorate the day include visiting Coast Guard outposts, exploring maritime-themed media, and contributing to maritime charities. The 2024 campaign focuses on promoting safety tips at sea and encouraging seafarers to understand their role in making the maritime sector a safer workplace. Everyone is encouraged to get involved by using the hashtag #SafetyTipsAtSea and supporting organizations that provide ongoing assistance to seafarers and their families.
