Daniel Golema shares his thoughts on social and emotional development in school curricula . I could never hide my disappointment when there stopped being an official measurement of personal Social and emotional development in British curriculum . It went from being a prime , and therefore very important, subject area in the early years , to being so dependent on the class teacher in primary years . Of course some schools have a well being curriculum in place , but I have never seen it recorded in school reports and official stats . Remember , in order to children to learn , they need to experience a regulated calm Nervous system , they need a feeling of safety and calm. Without that , learning simply cannot take place ! Should we consider referring to it as Co-Learning rather than Teaching? Teaching at its core is a collaborative process, a co-learning process to be precise. A process from which both the parties involved acquire knowledge. However, the orthodox classroom structure bears an imminent power hierarchy, which essentially alienates the educator from the students. The teachers who have had the most significant impact on our lives are often those who have also been our friends. We sometimes confuse fear with respect, but true respect is rooted in admiration and love. It is time we realise that and move beyond orthodox classroom structures and create more inclusive environments that foster greater interaction between educators and students, empowering students with more agency.
