There's a storm brewing. 73% of privately held businesses in the U.S. will transition over the next ten years, representing an approximately $14 trillion wealth transfer opportunity. Will businesses be ready to exit? Will they maintain economic continuity? The U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (SBC) convened a committee hearing on succession planning earlier this year in January and Scott Snider, President of the Exit Planning Institute was called upon for his insights and expertise across the field. I was nice to hear some high level implementation approaches on how and where to start spreading the word to business owners (ex. Small Business Association Development Centers, Veteran Owned Business Outreach Centers, Chambers of Commerce, Family Enterprise Centers, Alumni Associations, etc.). A key item that was emphasized was that the things any business owner should do as part of their exit planning efforts are the same things a business owner should be doing day to day to build a viable business. In other words, exit planning is just good business strategy. This includes a business attractiveness and business, personal, and personal financial readiness assessment. The results of this type of assessment help identify risk areas, some of which may relate to the 5 D's listed above. Business Owners: How will you bridge the gap? By operating your business in a way that, as Christopher M. Snider puts it, "drives the income and, more importantly, the transferable value to create the financial resources to enable you to achieve your personal purpose." It's a question that many of my conversations revolve around as a defense acquisition professional where I plan and activate the businesses providing those maintenance and sustainment services to ensure an operationally available weapons system. For example: What are the required capabilities that are needed to support a system? (i.e. people, equipment, facilities, business operations etc.) What capabilities currently exist to provide that level of support to the system? What are my options for "bridging the gap"? Similarly, understanding your three gaps as business owner is equally as important for building and leading a successful and significant company with a ready-to-exit capability. It's all part of the Master Plan. By having a clear picture of your personal purpose and what your desired lifestyle looks like post-business, you can figure out what your net worth goal is. The first gap is your Wealth Gap = Your Net Worth Goal minus Your Current Actual Net Worth (not including your business) The second gap is your Value Gap = Best-in-Class Value at Your Level of Sales minus Your Actual business Value The third gap is your Profit Gap = Best-in-Class Profit at Your Level of Sales minus Your Actual Profit This is how you begin to build a strategy that's decomposed into action. In government, there is a perversion where people are viewed as abundant, and technology is viewed as unaffordable. 💡 3: We must be able to reprogram money inside of 2 months, not 2 years. 💡 4: Rotations for officers every 2-3 years only ensures they haven’t had enough time to learn anything beyond surface-level platitudes. (If we have officers managing programs, they need to live with the decisions they make!) 💡 5: The requirements process ensures we play to our weaknesses. 💡 7: Conway’s Law leads to the profane conclusion that CJADC2 (Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control, the Department’s vision for machine-to-machine connection across services and allies to close kill chains) isn’t possible inside the Military Departments as currently conceived... 💡 8: Enable CCMDs as the buyers approximates market forces. 💡 11: Companies must invest their own capital — their asses must be in the hot seat if we want innovation. 💡 12: Small business programs should not be welfare. 💡 13: Federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) have the false moral certitude of being “non-profits,” which is about as believable as America’s hospitals being non-profits. 💡 15: For any interesting class of problem (i.e. non-trivial innovation) it isn’t possible to deductively design a reference architecture. (It is also impossible to "integrate" systems that must continually evolve!) 💡 17: Today, we are told companies building for Defense cannot possibly understand the warfighter and that even the warfighter can’t understand what he really needs, that his needs must be intermediated through the Acquisition’s priestly class. The result is countless Kafkaesque causality dilemmas.
