Whatever your plans, it’s likely that your dog will need extra care to cope with July 4th celebrations. Tips for Keeping Your Dog Safe and Calm: • Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat from the noise and commotion (see last month’s Training Tidbit).. • Stay Calm and Reassuring: Your dog takes cues from you, so staying calm and comforting can help ease their anxiety. • Avoid Fireworks: Keep your dog indoors during fireworks displays to prevent them from getting scared and running away. • Identification: Check that your dog has up-to-date identification tags and is microchipped, just in case they get frightened and run off. • Exercise Earlier: Give your dog plenty of exercise earlier in the day to help them relax in the evening. • Distract and Soothe: Use toys, chews, or calming music to distract and soothe your dog during loud events. • Add white noise such as fans and air conditioning units, as well as white noise generating apps, and turn on TV or radio for additional masking sound.
