Remembering John Prescott, Ivan Harbour, Architect and Senior Design Director, RSHP. "John Prescott’s vision for sustainable cities bridged policy and architecture, inspiring transformative projects like the £60,000 Home Challenge that has directly led to successive governments’ drive to recognise Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) as a truly sustainable solution to our housing needs. His commitment to innovation and collaboration showed how urban regeneration and his leadership in the Kyoto Protocol can create a lasting social and environmental impact." Prescott’s vision for urban regeneration developed with the Urban Task Force in 1998, chaired by Richard Rogers. The Task Force addressed the decline of British cities by advocating for sustainable urban living. Their seminal report, Towards an Urban Renaissance (1999), emphasised compact city design, mixed-use developments, green spaces and public transport. 📷 John Prescott with Richard Rogers on a visit to the Preston Road Estate, Hull, 21st May, 1999 #RichardRogers #JohnPrescott #UrbanTaskForce #MMC #KyotoProtocol

The outcomes of the Urban Task Force, chaired by the renowned architect Richard Rogers, hold significant relevance for cities around the world, including Sydney. One of the key reasons Sydney should consider these outcomes is the emphasis on creating livable cities. The task force advocates for compact well-designed urban spaces that prioritise pedestrian access, green areas, and community engagement. For a growing metropolis like Sydney, fostering livability is essential to meet the needs of its diverse population and enhance quality of life. Additionally, the Urban Task Force highlights the importance of sustainability in urban planning. As Sydney faces challenges related to climate change and population growth, incorporating sustainable practices—such as efficient public transport systems and green building designs—becomes increasingly critical. The recommendations encourage cities to embrace sustainable development principles, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of the environment. Committee for Sydney

Nice memory and photo Ivan, and good to be reminded that a political champion is always needed for change. The heady days of hope and innovation led by great firms like RSHP. Design Engine were actually English Partnerships’ Design Auditors for the £60k House initiative and reviewed MMC designs from all the practices involved. Sadly, only a percentage was actually built and occupied. Generally, things haven’t moved on as much as they should have in the industry.
