3 Career Tips I Wish I’d Known When I Left the Military. The transition from military to civilian life can feel like stepping into uncharted territory. Looking back on my journey, here are three tips I wish someone had shared with me early on: Leverage Your Leadership Skills: The private sector values leadership, but you need to frame your experience in ways that resonate with civilian employers. Focus on accomplishments, not rank. Network Relentlessly: Networking isn’t just about landing a job—it’s about building relationships and learning from others. Your next opportunity could come from a simple conversation. Stay Grounded in Your Values: The military instills discipline and integrity—traits that will set you apart in any workplace. Never compromise on the values that shaped you. These tips are just a glimpse into what I cover in Boots to Loafers. What’s the best advice you’ve received (or wish you had) during your transition? Share your thoughts below! #VeteranSuccess #CareerTips #BootsToLoafers #veteran #veterans #beallyoucanbe #army #navy #airforce #marine #marines

📣 Meet Robert Montes, Financial Advisor and CPFA at Link Financial Advisory! 📈 Hey everyone! 👋 I’m Robert Montes, one of the managing partners at Link Financial Advisory. With over 15 years of experience, I’ve helped countless clients navigate the complex world of personal finance. But here’s something you might not know about me: from 2012 to 2016, I took a break from the financial advising world to serve in the US Army. During that time, I was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) with the 2nd Ranger Battalion. As an infantryman, I wore many hats—serving in a Ranger Infantry Platoon and also on a Ranger Reconnaissance Team as a grenadier. People ask from time to time what the Ranger Regiment is like. There's two things I tell them: 1. You have to earn your spot everyday - there are no free lunches and everyone is just renting space in Battalion. 2. Don't be surprised by the level of aggression you find in your typical Ranger - Living in Battalion reminds me of putting a bunch of angry dogs around each other, all of which are highly trained and bread to destroy things, and then telling them they have to play nice with one another until they're sent out to do their job. Needless to say, things can definitely get heated and aren't what you find in your typical office environment 😆 My most impactful experience? Deploying to Afghanistan with the Regiment. Our unit focused on capture/kill missions of High-Value Targets in the Global War on Terror. It was intense, challenging, and taught me invaluable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and resilience. I’m incredibly grateful for my time in the Ranger Regiment as it helped shaped me into the person I am today. Let’s connect and chat about your financial goals! 🌟💰 #FinancialAdvisor #MilitaryExperience #TrustMatters

Being a military member presents unique challenges outside the battlefield. Here are five key hurdles they often face: 1. Esteem Distress: Transitioning to civilian roles can be tough. 2. The Generalist's Curse: Civilian leaders often specialize before assuming broader roles. 3. Definition of Experience: Civilian life highly values relevant experience. 4. Leadership as a Function: Leadership is equated with specific functions. 5. Coexistence of Cynicism and Idealism: In military culture, idealism and cynicism coexist. #All #ActiveDuty #TransitioningMilitary #MilitarySpouses #Reservists #Veterans #ACTNowEducation

Last week I shared a post that focused on perseverance, which led me to reflect a bunch on my time in the Marines. It dawned on me that perhaps the single greatest thing that the military teaches young Americans is perseverance - a quality that is becoming in short supply with the glut of instant gratitude brought on by the internet. Today you can instantly order anything to your door. Swipe right to find a romantic partner (and swipe again the moment the relationship hits a rough patch). You can be fed limitless bite-sized entertainment. Perseverance? Who needs it! I used to tell new hires at Team Rubicon that the three characteristics that would lead to success when working for me were simple: initiative, tenacity, and enthusiasm. Tenacity was really just another way of describing the ability to persevere in the face of hardship. So when I think about the military, I think about its celebration of, and instruction on, perseverance. So whether it's "Embrace the suck" (United States Marine Corps) or "The only easy day was yesterday" (most often attributed to Naval Special Warfare Command - Navy SEAL & SWCC Teams). In the not-too-distant future, perseverance will trump many, if not all other qualities (behind integrity, of course). #military #veteran #perseverance #CSR #socialimpact #corporatesocialresponsibility #leadership #entrepreneurship #entrepreneur
