Kentucky Derby: Let's Goooooo! - Fierceness – Yes, that last race was spectacular…but who was he beating? Won’t get that lonely lead in the Derby. As a matter of fact, I don't think he gets the lead at all. May run off and clobber them…or he may run off the board. That means Trifecta and Superfecta are big balloons! Short priced horse with questions.
Sierra Leone – Great run last time out. Looked like Mine That Bird getting a dream run all the way around. It was like all the horses got out of his way. Better lucky than good. I’m not sold that he can avoid the traffic trouble this time. Another that could win, but there are questions.
The Godfather’s Gold Sheet – I like to play horses on the way up that have been pointed for the Derby as opposed to those that ran their best race ever last time out and might regress. My pick: JUST A TOUCH. Several reasons. First, Trainer Brad Cox looks absolutely loaded this week at Churchill Downs. His horses are always well spotted, and mostly speed, which is favorable at Churchill. Second, Florent Geroux, Cox's main jockey takes the mount. In the Bluegrass, "Just a Touch" did all the dirty work through very fast fractions. Looked like a winner on the turn before being collared by "Sierra Leone". Third, I think "Just a Touch" can sit and stalk from a great post position (8). Morning line odds: 10-1. I’ll use several horses underneath: Sierra Leone, Catching Freedom, Encino, Resilience, Fierceness and Stronghold. The two favorites and four longshots. Trifecta: $30. Superfecta: $120. Let's make some money!
