We hear a lot about employee burnout. In a recent SHRM article, a reported 57% of employees are experiencing at least moderate burnout. However, did you know that 98% of HR professionals are burned out? As HR professionals, we recognize employee burnout by implementing initiatives to combat the problem. But how often do we recognize and practice our own self-care? I read somewhere once that as HR people we need to put on our own oxygen mask before we can help others. Is there something you do for your own self-care? One great thing I do for myself is to connect with fellow HR people and use them as a support group! There are a lot of challenges out there in the HR world and there is always someone in my circle who has either experienced the same thing or a great tip to share! Our local SHRM chapter - NAHRA - meets every third Thursday of the month and has some very knowledgeable and compassionate members! Check out our website for meeting information: https://nahra.shrm.org!

Friday HR Positivity Day! (FHRP Day?) I think I’ll start a new trend – every Friday, my post will be a positive story about Human Resources. To begin with – I will have to use my own stories. But if you want to submit something – we can post it here on LI and in my newsletter on LI and in my Substack feed. I was an internal HR Benefits Manager in a large hospital system. I can’t remember if the employee came to me – or her supervisor, but I think her supervisor under the circumstances. The supervisor was asking for help for her staff member, let’s call her Deborah. Deborah was a single mother with three children and she was dying from breast cancer. She was in the hospital when open enrollment was taking place and did not enroll in short term disability. The request was to find a way to help Deborah enroll late, since her medical needs were dire. She may have even been in the hospital when open enrollment was active. Since our short-term disability program was self-funded, and this was an exception, I needed my Vice President’s approval. To me, this was a no-brainer and an opportunity to help one of our own. Deborah had long term disability, but her family would be hurt without that bridge. It was a little thing. My boss and I went back and forth about this, battling between denial because of the rules and approving because of extenuating circumstances. Finally, it dawned on me – I needed to put it in numbers. Now mind you, I had seen this VP bend the rules and approve a $25,000 increase in retirement funding for a potential political ally. So, I knew it could be done. I started the campaign of monetizing the request – it’s only $2400. It’s only $2400. It’s only $2400. Finally, the VP heard the number – after another volley of back and forth emails. Finally, it sank in and I got my approval to provide this small benefit to this family. That is one of my proudest moments – providing a benefit to an employee when they really needed it. This is what HR can do. #hrstrategies #hrstrategy #humancapitalmanagement #hr #humanresources #leadership #leadershipskills #leadershipdevelopment Subscribe to me on Substack for delivery direct to your email of extra newsletters, podcasts, and training announcements. https://lnkd.in/gbTmm65x

It was All About the Gimies This Past Weekend Meeting with your fellow HR professionals is always a pleasure. " We are we," as we say in St. Lucia. We can relate in so many ways. We understand the common challenges and are always there to offer moral support to each other. Sometimes, the challenges seem to outweigh the "positives," but we always remain faithful to the cause. To my many "HR buddies" out there, let us keep focused and continue doing the great job that we do. #HR #humanresources #commitment
