For the first time, less than 25% of US cities rank in the top 1,000 of the Global Startup Ecosystem Index. But the US remains the global startup leader in total startup output, triple that of its closest competitor. The US continues to dominate global startup funding, with a total of $326.9 billion invested in 2023. While the number of deals has decreased, the scale of funding per deal has grown. London Tech Week has been a strong showcase for UK innovation - even though all funding metrics are down significantly since a mid-pandemic investment peak in early 2021. London may lack the scaleup growth capital available in the US, as a startup ecosystem it is up there with the best, according to Startup Genome, which analyses the relative strength of global tech hubs. London is tied in second place (with New York) behind Silicon Valley. Tech Nation Rising Stars saw early-stage UK firms pitch and it was interesting to see what the judges were drawn to: ❤️ Passion: A personal desire that drives the founder, clear demonstration of the ‘why’ that will inspire others 🦄 Ambition: Belief that the business can become a unicorn, clarity of the scale of the problem, and the potential prize 🚀 Traction: proof of product/ market fit, plans for growth and clear sense of route to market ⚔️ Moat: uniqueness of proposition and focus, barriers to others entering the category and evidence of proprietary IP 💷 Revenue: credibility on finances, awareness of what impacts the cost base, and validity of business model Most founders ticked most boxes, and all presented decent cases for investment. But it was notable that the winners were those who had a compelling story as to how they would tackle a major social problem. And as former winner Anthony Rose pointed out, VCs play a numbers game - if one “hit” pays for nine misses they’re less interested in startups that don’t look like unicorns in waiting. This suggests “constructive disruptor” founders are more likely to attract the attention, build the community and generate the funding they need to achieve their goals. The French Tech Mission, Franceʼs government team responsible for supporting the start-up ecosystem growth in France, announces the award winners of the 5th edition of the French Tech Next40/120, a program dedicated to the 120 most advanced French start-ups. 🌍With the likes of Mirakl (marketplace technologies), Voodoo (video games) and Qonto (financial services), the 2024 cohort of the French Tech Next40/120 program brings together France’s 120 most successful start-ups, including 28 of France’s unicorns (startups with valuations exceeding $1 billion). Nearly 90% of these 120 start-ups already have an international business presence, notably in the US, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the UK. 🔝The 2024 cohort of the #FrenchTech Next40/120 is the most selective since the inception of the program and embodies the momentum in the French Tech ecosystem. In total, the 120 companies had a combined net revenue of €10 billion in 2023, up by 3% in one year and 31 (out of the 120) companies reported a net revenue exceeding €100 million. Acting as a driving force in France's economic, technological, and industrial landscape, these companies already employ 40,000 workers worldwide. 🌿DeepTech companies account for 23% of the 120 startups selected in the 5th edition. These companies are aligned with “France 2030” strategic plan, France's investment plan for emerging technologies in the most strategic sectors.
