Here is picture of myself and my wonderful colleague Tatiana Ostara (Assoc. CIPD) taking some time to do some planning for this new financial year. Being Temporary Recruiters for the #charitysector and #nonprofits, much of our role is all about being reactive, and servicing our candidates and clients quickly and efficiently. So, we need to be disciplined, and block out time in our week to focus on certain aspects of our jobs, and work together. Our advice to hiring managers is to plan ahead where possible, as often it actually is the case that temporary recruitment needs can be planned for, and not simply a last minute fix, and we know it can feel like a stressful period when it need not be. Finance jobs are like London buses, you wait ages for one and then 3 come along at once! I often see the pattern in Finance that there are no needs in a certain area and then all of a sudden every client wants the same thing at the same time. While this is great for candidates who posses the skillset of the hour, it can leave others feeling like they're waiting for a bus that isn't coming. At the moment I am seeing an busload of technical Accounting roles. What do we think the next bus load will look like? With over 25 years experience as a commercial accountant I firmly advocate against under-resourcing the finance department. Never underestimate the significance of adequately staffing a sector of your business that directly influences cashflow! Whether it's the Finance Manager, accountant, debtors/creditors, or payroll administrator, the imperative is to promptly fill any vacant positions. When a member of the finance team is overburdened, the risk of overlooking critical processes increases significantly, potentially leading to adverse effects on your cashflow.

Job searching as a senior finance professional is tough. Maybe this will help! The last 12 months have been difficult for most people searching for a new role at Financial Controller level and above. At this level, you are assumed to be the expert in your space and that you are in control, but right now it's hard to be in control. No one ever considers it from your perspective. The more senior you get, there are less roles in a business that are suitable for you. Additionally, the expectations of internal teams and hiring managers when screening candidates, get higher. Often disregarding applicants without in-industry experience. The other factors at play; as you progress in your career and life, your financial and personal life/family commitments increase too. 🏫 School and higher education fees. 🏠 Larger houses and the associated mortgages. 🏀 Extracurricular activities for children starting to take on more pursuits outside of school. 🏥 Care/medical requirements for elderly relatives. Talk about stressful! Which is why for the whole of December and January, I'll be offering free CV/LinkedIn Profile/Interview advice to any Senior Finance candidate that is out of work. I'll give you 20 minutes of my time to point you in the right direction and help where I can.
