This story from Racer Media & Marketing, Inc. broke yesterday and I can’t say that I am surprised. Many years ago, we talked about Cup cars racing in Long Beach and how awesome that would be. The field would more than likely need to be broken into an A and B main with a final coming out of those heat races to allow proper space for the cars on the track given its tight and narrow construction. The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is one of the few premium sporting events in the US. Its history, weather, culture, scenic views, party atmosphere and Southern California market is largely unrivaled in motorsports…and being born in Long Beach, was the first auto race I ever attended. We talked about NASCAR and INDYCAR running a dual event weekend 6-8 years ago…but fast forward to now, I hope the stock cars stay away. It’s an IndyCar event. Yes, I am all about growth in motorsports, but this one is a bit different. That race transformed that port city into a cultural ocean front gem over time…even after years of NASCAR trying to thwart IndyCar business moves. NASCAR is motivated, well-funded and has a head of steam with fresh blood in their executive offices…hopefully this story ends with a successful purchase of the 50% stake in the event by Penske Entertainment. Only time will tell. Congrats to Sam Hunt Racing and Corey Heim! They almost pulled out the win on the last lap in Atlanta this past Saturday. However, they still finished a very respectable "Top 5". I am proud to say that both parties above work with PK Velocity Sports and Entertainment! The picture below is from the race and the SHR/Heim race car is No. 26. What do you notice first about that race car? There is no sponsor featured anywhere on the car. If you watched the race, Corey Heim was mentioned in the broadcast SEVERAL times. Which means the race car was shown on National Television off and on for over 2.5 hours, with no corporate logos featured anywhere prominently! MISSED OPPORTUNITY! "You should sell to F1!" It’s a recommendation I often hear when people first see Iron Neck. And it’s validating – we’ve already sold to F1 teams! Through a mutual connection, we even sent one to Max Verstappen a few years back, and he’s posted a few times training with it. Some of our earliest customers a decade ago were strength and conditioning coaches for IndyCar drivers like Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Charlie Kimball, and Josef Newgarden—All these guys still use it. 🥹 But here’s the real challenge: how big is the market for neck strengthening in motorsports? Let’s take a look. First, unlike typical motorsport sponsors, the overlap between what these athletes need and what the general consumer seeks isn’t always obvious. Drivers train their necks to withstand extreme forces at high speeds – a need that doesn’t translate directly to most consumers. This makes it harder to turn motorsport success into widespread consumer demand. At the professional level, there are roughly 200 drivers across F1, IndyCar, NASCAR, and other pro circuits, with around 100 teams. Below that, thousands of drivers (5-10k) in lower-tier series, karting, and amateur racing events could benefit from the same value props as the top drivers. This is the meat of this market, and one that we have (somewhat passively) realized dozens of Iron Neck customers. Motorsport enthusiasts, including a growing niche of SIM racers—who don’t experience G-forces on the neck—present a much larger global market. The value proposition however doesn’t align as strongly. Maybe Max Verstappen saying, "If it’s good enough for my neck, it’ll obliterate your unresolved neck pain!" could change that! The last bucket includes a couple hundred motorsport focused training facilities globally. Modest penetration into these markets may yield sales of 300+ Iron Necks, maybe a six-figure venture. Thankfully, we’ve kept busy (and focused) with other markets where product-market fit is more broadly aligned—BJJ, unresolved neck pain, youth sports concussion prevention. Two questions for you… 1. With this lens on the ‘F1 market’ would you push into motorsports? 2. How have you handled high level buy-in in a niche market, that struggled to translate to a broader consumer base?

This weekend, NASCAR Cup Series will be returning to Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina for the The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company 400. With such a big event each year coming to such a small town, we figured the economic impact of the event in this area must be massive and very easy to see in our consumer spending data. So, we pulled together all of the transactions in our database for Darlington's 29532 zip code where the race track is located, and just as we expected the signal is big and very clear to see. We extrapolated our sample out into an estimate of total credit and debit spend for the area, and grouped transactions by week. Last year's Goodyear 400 took place on Sunday, May 14 which can clearly be identified as the first big spike on the chart below where over $13.1M was spent during the week. This was the second biggest spending week in Darlington for the year. You may be wondering: what happened during that second big spike on the chart in early September, which was the biggest spending week in the zip code for 2023? Well, NASCAR actually visits Darlington twice every season, and that spike coincides with their second visit last year on Sunday, September 3 for the Cookout! 500 when over $13.4M was spent! These numbers are staggering, and a clear example of just how much economic impact NASCAR race events bring to the areas they visit. With the average week for the year seeing just over $10M in spending in this zip code, each of these weekends drove more than a 30% increase in overall spending above average, and this is only in one zip code! With this much impact in the raceways zip code, we'd expect to find even more increased activity elsewhere around the area.

It was 1996 and I was in the IndyCar paddock. I was talking to an aspiring young racer who told me that he simply needed sponsors so he could race and get to IndyCar. I said to him, “No, you do not need sponsors, you need value. Find value and the sponsorship will come.” That was nearly 30 years ago. Below is from a RACER story about the status of ex-Formula 1 and current (kinda) IndyCar driver Romain Grosjean for 2025. “It’s all budget,” Grosjean told RACER. “So right now, I’ve got nothing lined up. It is what it is. I think last year was probably one of my best seasons, and I may end up not being in the grid next year, just because the marketing has been horrendous for IndyCar, the hybrid has brought the costs to a level that’s unbearable for teams, and that’s the way it is. I think we built something good that I would like to carry on, and they would like to carry on as well. But we need sponsors, so we are actively trying to find money for the car, and then once the car is funded, we can go racing.” Imagine an NFL quarterback suggesting that he will not be playing next year unless he can find someone to provide “funding”. Someone who will have no expectation of reasonable ROI. Motorsports are cost-based. Sports like the NFL and NBA are value-based. It's time for a new business model in motorsport. Bob Pockrass FOX NASCAR Insider BRISTOL, Tenn. — Denny Hamlin won a Bristol Motor Speedway race that turned into a tire-management event where drivers were in jeopardy of having flat tires or running out of tires. While teams expected some tire issues, it was anticipated that the track would rubber up throughout the event. The track never took rubber, and that resulted in a race with a track-record 54 lead changes — and a track-tying 16 different drivers leading — over the 500 laps on the high-banked 0.533-mile concrete track. Why so many changes? Drivers had to make the choice on when to go full speed because they knew if they went 100 percent, their tires would last fewer than 50 laps. “This is the first time the driver played a huge role in a long, long time,” Hamlin said. “It’s a different philosophy from what we’re used to, which is everyone is just kind of on the gas all the time running the bottom, the shortest way around. “Technique was a huge deal today.” Hamlin, who led a race-high 163 laps, outlasted teammate Martin Truex Jr. while another teammate, Ty Gibbs, led 137 laps before tire issues foiled him. Takeaways — all about tire management — from the race where following Hamlin across the finish line were Truex, Brad Keselowski, Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson. Drivers Mixed Reviews Hamlin felt the tire management fell in his wheelhouse. But when he pitted under green with 53 laps to go, his right rear tire had about two laps left in it. “Denny drove a great race,” said Hamlin crew chief Chris Gabehart. “How would I feel if we ran 10th or 15th? I can tell you one thing, I would have said, ‘Man, that was hard.’ And that’s good. “It’s supposed to be hard. It’s not supposed to be easy.” Hamlin spun earlier in the race after blowing a tire and felt that allowed him to figure out how hard he could push. Once he knew the limit, he felt he could control the race.  “You learned on the fly,” Hamlin said. “You just made adjustments. Each run we made, we just got a little better.” FINAL LAPS: Denny Hamlin wins NASCAR Food City 500 <!-->--> The biggest challenge was just the surprise and drivers not knowing they would need to manage tires. NASCAR actually gave teams an extra set during the race, increasing the allotment for the event to 11 sets of tires. And then once they managed tires, drivers had to make a choice on whether to punish their tires and hope someone else would have an issue before they did. “It was weird to manage and guess on how hard to run, guess on how each run was going to play out,” Larson said. “The strategy side of it seems kind of fun but I never want to do that again. “To run a race like that every week is not good. … It was just different and we somehow made the most of it.” The tires were the same as they were at Bristol last fall.
