Community! We need your help to support women of color to reclaim their narratives, own their truths, and push back against a political and social landscape bent on attack. Six years ago when we began our 'this is my body' storytelling program, our first performer vulnerably shared about her decision to have an abortion. Since that first performance, we watched in outrage as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the right to an abortion that had been held for decades. And we've watched each month, each year, since then as women's bodily autonomy and our rights have been under attack. But these attacks also come in many shapes and forms, from the very first comments about our bodies. Each moment when someone tries to tell us about ourselves or lay claim to our own stories. And over the years our stories have reflected that with topics such as fatphobia, asexuality, surgery, sexual violence, invasions of privacy, eating disorders, death, and more. We began 'this is my body' as a way of pushing back against these attacks, specifically for women of color. As a way to start the conversation not at the points of infraction and violation but at the place where we own and love our bodies and stories. It is about reclamation. It is about empowerment. It is about not feeling afraid or alone. As Vina Vo and I gear up for our seventh year of programming, we believe that this work is more critical now than ever before. And we are determined to meet the needs of the moment for our communities. Today, we are launching a fundraising campaign to raise $15,000 by January 31, 2025 to fully fund our 2025 program, ensuring all costs are covered, including program fees for all participants, facilitators, venues, and materials. Seeing a foundation that’s out here advocating for women, offering crisis relief, and pushing for real change is everything. They’re breaking down barriers, fighting for mental health support, and making sure no one gets left behind. This group is all about dignity, respect, and giving people the tools they need to thrive—no matter their background. And honestly, we need more of that in the world right now. Many nonprofits are focused on improving the lives of women, children, and other underserved groups. For me, this highlights the critical need for women to be present at the decision-making table. Equally, having a board that includes individuals from the communities the organization serves can be a powerful force for change. I work with nonprofits of all shapes and sizes, and I truly believe we should concentrate on fostering collaboration and inclusivity to drive real progress. 14 anti-DEI bills have been passed in 12 states since 2023, shuttering DEI offices at colleges and universities across the country. Ironically, many of the public institutions that award the highest number of doctorates to Black women and other historically excluded groups — like the University of Florida, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Texas A&M University — are in states that have passed laws banning DEI offices, programs, and trainings. At every level of higher education, thousands of students now find themselves without the crucial support systems they need to navigate their degrees successfully. We’re at a critical crossroads. We can either lament the fall of DEI in higher education or take action. At Cohort Sistas, we’re leaning all the way in. As universities and companies choose to abandon their commitments to equity, we're taking the lead to provide the resources, mentorship, and community that research has shown increases doctoral retention and completion rates for women and students of color. We're determined to ensure that the reversal of policies advancing equity in higher ed doesn’t deepen the already significant racial gaps in doctoral education. Our "Together for Equity" campaign is a call to all who believe in the power of education and the importance of representation. Together, we can ensure that every scholar, no matter their background, has the support they need to succeed. Our logo was thought out clearly! The ❤️ represents the United women and men who love our community. The 🙌 are the desire to lift up each other, our community of women, and students. Our mission is still very clear. Supporting Women in business and giving students a clear supportive environment to succeed in class and in their career choice. How do we do it? 1) Collaboration with the Community and SBA on the needs for women in business. 2) Conversations and direction from schools on what their girls need. 3) Scholarships 10-20 each year for driven and underserved girls. 4) Research and data 5) Uniting all people - leaving no one out!
