For three years now, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has been supporting the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, together with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Villgro , to launch and run the Home Grown Solutions (HGS) Accelerator. Aiming at addressing African healthcare challenges with local innovations, the HGS Accelerator supports African healthcare ventures. Since the launch of the pilot in 2021, the accelerator supported 28 startups, helping them raise $70+ million and impacting over 5.9 million patients in more than 30 countries across the continent. They have just published a short report, highlighting the key learnings from the last 3 years. Here are a few I noted: 1) Given the challenge with accessibility and affordability of healthcare, ventures should creatively design their business models to meet these needs in a sustainable way 2) African businesses should not underestimate the complexities of market expansion even if operating a scalable technology-based healthcare business - Africa is not one big market 3) It is important for investors to consider innovative ways to de-risk investments while including a focus on social impact to support healthcare ventures unlock success and scale 4) African policy makers (Governments, regulators) have a great role to play to build an attractive environment for all ventures Special thanks to my colleagues Mathieu Lamiaux. ✨ Spending time together is pivotal to fostering #trust among team members. ✨ By sharing challenges, risks, and opportunities, we learn from a greater #We. Last week's extended Patient Safety and Quality Leadership Summit was an excellent example of this. ✨ Through asking open-ended questions, #actionlearning helped us get to breakthrough solutions while developing our leadership skills. We made a powerful, productive, and positive step in our transformational journey to further enabling and empowering the Business Units and Markets while further driving the 'From Me to We' mindset and approach. ✨ During the summit, we recognized the great work of colleagues who went above and beyond. Special guests, Roy Jakobs, Marnix van Ginneken, Edwin P., and Mark Stoffels, encouraged and inspired us on how there is a patient, customer, and consumer at the center of everything we do and how what we do today affects someone's life tomorrow. ✨ We also had the opportunity to improve the quality of lives by restoring dignity to amputees in Ghana, Uganda, Nepal, or India through assembling functional prosthetic hands, CE Certified as a Class 1 Medical Device and sponsored by The Hand Project. At Philips, we aim to improve 2.5 billion lives per year by 2030, including 400 million in underserved communities. The Hand Project team-building opportunity is a powerful way to add to our own purpose and a meaningful way to give back. Leaders coming together, patient safety and quality, patient impact, building trust, and action learning were all key themes of the summit.
