Each staffing segment has its own challenges. Understanding those differences is crucial for addressing them effectively. On The Staffing Ring Podcast, Matt Dichter from Staffing Engine highlighted the unique challenges in healthcare staffing today. Healthcare staffing is in a tough spot post-COVID. Pay rates spiked, but working conditions didn’t keep up—and now, the nurse shortage is real. During COVID, nurses faced demanding conditions, even as pay rates surged. Now, with the pandemic easing, rates have adjusted, but many nurses have left the field—due to burnout, retirement, and the tough work environment. This creates a major shortage, even though agencies still see a fair amount of applications. Healthcare is struggling with staff shortages, while professional staffing faces a different battle: getting more job orders amidst increased competition. The key concern for agencies today is not just making placements, but winning more jobs to serve their candidates. What if... we paid nurses more? Or rather, what if we paid all frontline workers more? For the last episode of series 5 of the What if? podcast, from the CIPD's Work. magazine, I spoke to Zeynep Ton and Julian Jessop about national minimum wage strategy, how to make jobs both high quality and well paid but also highly productivity, and the potential unintended consequences of 'meddling' with market forces... Why do we pay people what we pay them? Why do we pay some of the roles with arguably the most real-world impact the least? And what does low pay do to our wellbeing (and IQ levels)? All this and more – listen here (or via Apple or Spotify): https://lnkd.in/eRsT4GBQ

What a key question. ‘It’s all about reward and recognition’ is the title of a keynote presentation I deliver. And reward and recognition is the basis of workplace behaviour and performance. How fair we perceive it, how it motivates us or doesn’t to perform.

The nation is amid a skills shortage, particularly in regional Australia. Many sectors are feeling the crunch of a smaller talent pool, and it’s more pronounced in regional areas, especially for highly skilled roles. These labour shortages have a stranglehold on regional businesses - from the construction sector, where a lack of tradies is forcing businesses to turn away lucrative jobs, to healthcare where worker shortages are taking a toll on midwives, nurses and regional GPs. So when times are tough, how do you attract & retain talent? On the latest episode of my podcast Let’s Talk Business, I spoke to industrial relations lawyer Andrew Douglas about what business owners can do to help retain staff and what they should be doing to attract (and keep!) good talent. There has to be recognition that as managers, we have to take responsibility for creating a strong workplace culture - an environment where people want to work. However, Andrew raised a good point - sometimes we have to accept that we aren’t always going to keep people - but it’s how we manage their off-boarding that counts. You can listen to the whole episode with Andrew on Let’s Talk Business now…
