Its official! As 7 News and Taylor Aiken reported tonight, the new Sydney Metro connection from Chatswood to Sydenham via the CBD will open to passengers in August. It will be a game changer for our wonderful city bringing people into the heart of the CBD. We foreshadowed that the link was close to opening when Business Sydney last week was invited to inspect the magnificent Martin Place Station. The sound and sight of driverless trains “rehearsing” for the big day came as a definite clue that the Metro’s new link was set to roll. Also, it was good of Premier Chris Minns to give his political predecessors credit for their part in Sydney getting this great public transport addition. Metro rocks!!! Sydney is just months from a public transport revolution as new Metro stations open in the heart of the city. Just how revolutionary this game changing connection will be is still anyone’s guess. It will certainly change how Sydneysiders access their city as the Chatswood to Sydenham link comes on line adding stations at Crows Nest, North Sydney, Barangaroo,Hunter Street, Martin Place, Gadigal and Central. It might also help cure some of the remaining post-pandemic blues that continue to hold back our city’s full economic recovery. I’m an eternal optimist. The high-speed high-frequency Metro might even coax more of the entrenched work-from-home brigade back to the city. In just over a week, millions of Londoners will be voting in the Mayoral elections. ✍ Whoever wins, transport will be their biggest responsibility, taking decisions that will affect the lives of millions. Last week, Clean Cities and Possible hosted the Future of London Transport Hustings where the 4 major parties laid out their plans to shape the future of transport. We were delighted to secure the support of more than 20 NGOs and civil society groups. 🚆 The next Mayor will face a number of key challenges, including ensuring that transport is available and affordable in a cost of living crisis. Urgent action is needed on reducing deaths and serious injuries from road collisions, cleaning up our dirty air and securing a stable climate for future generations. We wanted to give the main parties the opportunity to set out their stall on how they will shape the future of London’s transport system. #LDNtransport It was a lively debate and of course, there was the usual disagreement on some key themes. But it was really welcoming to see the areas where the parties agreed and came together - something often lacking in politics. We welcomed agreement on the following areas… 📣 - Improving transport connectivity in outer London, giving people a real choice of transport options and decreasing car dependency. - Addressing the lack of accessibility on our train and tube network for people with reduced mobility who struggle to use services. - Commitment to tackling road fatalities by improving road infrastructure and working closely with local authorities. - Ditching diesel to improve the air we breathe and properly investing in electric charging infrastructure in the city. - Investing and expanding shared and micro-mobility to drive down car use in the city. 💥 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 🚌 Council officials are recommending Aberdeen's bus priority measures are made permanent next week, despite more than 500 objections being submitted to the council's consultation. The council's operations chief, Mark Reilly, says the elected officials should "note the benefits highlighted by bus operators" in the report. Since the introduction of the bus gates, the city's main operators have reported improved journey times, while First Bus Aberdeen froze its prices for 2024/25. However, a survey from Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce (AGCC) was carried out in early 2024, which more than 1,000 people took part in. 90% of respondents say the changes to the road network have had a negative impact on their usual activities in Aberdeen city centre (65% substantially negative, 25% slight negative). 📝 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gYsMd4by
