PART II: We're back with recaps from last week's Women's Health Innovation Series in Boston, where an audience member asked a thrilling question to a group of phenomenal women as we approached the end of a panel on making effective business cases for women's health. “If you had $50B to start a women’s health company, what would you build?” You could feel the audience almost jump out of their seats to lean in closer for their answers. Diana Torgersen told us she would start with the research, filling the enormous scientific gaps we all know exist. Susan Nicholson MD FIDSA motioned to acquire a massive amount of women’s health companies that are already doing great work and perhaps simply not receiving enough support or traction, aggregating them to build a powerful business from what’s already working right now. Trish Costello pointed out the importance of preventative measures and care, speaking on the need to place some of the responsibility in women’s health reciprocally on men (e.g., with male contraceptives and family planning, etc.). Megan Greenfield, Ph.D. pointed out that simply by *sharing* our knowledge (meaning, taking what we already know, centralizing all of our health data, organizing it, and embedding it into a more universally codified version of our healthcare system to be integrated into protocols), we would set the foundation for all new innovation to be more successful when hitting the market. We obviously live in the real world with real budgets and real limitations. But hearing the wildest dreams of brilliant minds - and what they would do with infinite resources - is truly inspiring. Let that serve as a big “START HERE” flag for other scientists, researchers, and entrepreneurs aiming to chip away at creating solutions that contribute to the bigger picture. Which of these has gotten more attention, ink, and investment? If the people who develop and invest in innovation and technology have influence over the problems we’re solving, then it only makes sense that men’s health issues have gotten far more attention, study and investment than women’s. The emergence of FemTech is starting to change that and starting to shine a light on some important facts. Like the fact that: - Diseases present differently in women than in men. - Historically, clinical trials have excluded female participants and research data have been collected from males and generalized to females.  - Data gaps underestimate women’s health burden, limiting innovation and investment. - The ranks of female leaders in healthcare and in tech are thin, and some reports indicate we may be seeing a regression of some of the recent progress that’s been made. - FemTech is helping to match capital and talent to unmet needs. Accenture + Springboard Enterprises recently released the "State of Women's Health" report, which examines the current status of women's health and emphasizes critical areas where innovation and funding are urgently required. Take a sneak peek at some data here: -Only 5% of medicines approved by the FDA in 2022 were for female-specific conditions. -In 2023, only $1.1 billion of the $26.5 billion VC capital invested in healthcare went to women's health companies, despite a 59% increase from the previous year. -The budget for the NIH Office for Research on Women’s Health increased by only 9.7% over 17 years, from $41 million in 2003 to $45 million in 2020. From underserved to understood: How to transform women's health innovations from niche research into viable ventures It is clear that female-focused MedTech ventures are sorely needed, with women spending a higher proportion of their lifetimes in debilitating health than men do. But despite women comprising half the world's population, women's health continues to be considered a "niche" market.
