Disheartening Experience I wanted to share a disappointing encounter I had on Monday at Avari Towers Karachi, where I went for a walk-in interview for a Mechanical Engineer position at a Saudi-based company. Unfortunately, the interviewer refused to consider my application solely because of my gender. As a Saudi resident, I was hoping for a fair chance to showcase my skills and experience, but it seemed that my gender was the only factor that mattered to them. What's even more disturbing is that the job description did not mention any gender preferences or restrictions, leading me to believe that the company was open to hiring candidates of any gender. Despite my qualifications and experience, I was told that they are not open to hiring female candidates for the role, despite the advertisement not mentioning any gender preference. I was shocked and disheartened to face such blatant sexism and discrimination in a professional setting. It's disturbing to think that such archaic mindsets still exist in our industry, limiting women's opportunities and growth. I believe that skills, qualifications, and experience should be the only criteria for selection, not gender or nationality. One big lesson I've learned as a recruiter in Pakistan is that many people don't show professionalism, especially during the interview process. It's surprising how often candidates commit to interviews but don’t show up, then complain about not finding jobs or getting enough pay. Even when candidates do show up, many don't know how to take interview calls professionally. It’s clear that universities aren't teaching this, and people seem unwilling to learn. I've thought about addressing this before but held back. Now, I feel it's important to share. The job market here is filled with red-flag candidates only! Normalize taking online interviews during Ramadan In the scorching heat of Karachi, candidates are often called for 2 to 3 rounds of interviews. Firstly, they must locate the office, enduring the heat while fasting. Then, they're called for subsequent rounds. This practice is inhumane. By conducting the initial round on Zoom, we can alleviate this burden. Candidates can save the expense spent on Careem or Indrive as well as the petrol expense, and avoid the discomfort of navigating the city in the heat while fasting. Let's choose empathy over inconvenience and normalize online interviews during Ramadan.
