CUSTOMER vs. CONSUMER How can a customer-first strategy be limiting a fully successful digital transformation in your organisation? It may sound like semantics, but there really is an important distinction to be made between the two in the modern context. The words 'customer' and 'consumer' are not synonymous, are not interchangeable. And we have become lax in using them as such. How so? A customer purchases a product or service, but they might not be the consumer. Conversely, a consumer uses a product or service, but may not be the customer. However, a customer can also be a consumer, if they both buy and use that product or service. By this definition, customers are not equal to end-users. Consumers always equal end-users. Customers exist only at the paypoint, while consumers exist virtually everywhere you look. To adopt a consumer perspective is to finally adopt the much lauded holistic approach to it all. To see beyond the customer perspective. It's time to look at every touchpoint, every node, every intersection of technology, process, and people... and ask who and where the consumer is... understand why they are consumers, what they are consuming, and how they are best served. We rarely acknowledge that the first line of consumers of any brand or business are the people it employs, for example. Firstly, if your people aren't buying into your consumer promise and value proposition, then nobody else is either. And secondly, they are the primary consumers of all the tools and solutions you equip them with. In order to produce, sell, and distribute your offering. Their level of adoption and ongoing utilisation of inwardly-facing systems as end-users is the foundation upon which outwardly-facing systems enjoy success. Your business can't turn systems into success unless your people both can and want to leverage your technology, and have the skills to do so. These are the consumers whose needs need to be serviced first. But they are not the only ones.
