I considered moving back to Alberta for a few years before I pulled the trigger. Lifestyle-wise, what I wanted was already here: ▶ Proximity to family & friends ▶ Accessibility to the outdoors (I'm not just talking mountains, but the river valleys, parks & trail systems) ▶ A smaller, more tight-knit community Career-wise, I hesitated. I knew I wanted (needed) to stay with Artemis Canada. I love my career & my team. The question was: as a boutique recruitment firm that works with growth-stage tech co's to connect them with leaders who can scale...would there be enough of a market for us here? For ~2 years we waited & paid attention as the signs rolled in. The signs? ▶ TO & MTL-based VC's we partner with started telling us about the strong deal flow they were finding in AB (this wasn't happening 3 years ago) ▶ Scale-up tech leaders started noticing my AB area code and saying "Hey - what's going on in Alberta?" and "If you see any great roles come up in Alberta, let me know. I'd consider moving." (this also wasn't happening 3 years ago). ▶ BetaKit, Waterloo Tech Highlights, and other typically TO/Waterloo-focused tech publications began highlighting funding announcements for AB tech co's and other AB tech news with increasing frequency ▶ Clients requesting we look in Alberta for certain industry talent or specific AI/ML talent from top tier AB post-sec programs We hit what we felt was an inflection point, I made the move, and spotlights like this confirm what we know to be true: Alberta tech is on the rise. A core challenge highlighted in this article? TALENT. Specifically, the relative scarcity of senior-level talent required to successfully scale our tech companies. Exciting news for Alberta’s gaming industry! Ten years ago video games was a less than $100 billion industry. According to some reports it could reach in excess of $650 billion by 2030.
