Late Post 4: The Sustainable Business Challenge 2024 was a 5-day-long challenge to create a 5-minute pitch for an initiative that would encourage university students to actively incorporate the UN's SDGs into their daily lives. The brief was set by Action for Sustainable Development.
When I say it was 5 days long, I mean I was on a call for five days with my amazing team, Santhoshkumar Manoharan and Jenny Vu from Newcastle University, UK, Ambra M. from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), Netherlands, Archbold Chatindiwara from University of Pretoria and Dawu Jamela from University of Cape Town, South Africa. Working across different time zones, we brainstormed and developed our ideas online, prepared the presentation, and worked on the pitch. The few hours we weren't on call were spent working on the project individually.
We came up with an initiative called Green Harvest, where students are taught to farm on the campus. A symbiotic partnership with local farmers and experts on urban farming would allow for buying local produce on campus, pre-order freshly-made healthy meals from an ever-changing menu, consulting and volunteering opportunities with partners, certificates, workshops, and much more. Gamification of the process would maximise student participation.

In a group project, it is essential to disagree, discuss, and provide and receive feedback, and in a project with tight deadlines, you need to do it skillfully and quickly. Therefore, even in a short project, it is important to build trust and social capital to function together as a group. We did this by having an hour-long chat before the launch of the project, where we discussed our objectives for doing the challenge, backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses. This made working on the project so much easier and enjoyable!
