Maia, an URBACT City! During my professional activity, I have had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of the URBACT program, since its inception in 2002, where it was only applied to cities benefiting from the URBAN community initiative and the Urban Pilot Projects programme, to date, an important instrument of territorial cooperation, where through a diverse range of urban network typologies, European cities exchange experiences with each other around a specific local challenge, for developing Integrated Action Plans, anchored in the renowned URBACT participatory method. Therefore, it is with deep satisfaction that Maia is now an URBACT City by integrating the 10 recently approved Innovation Transfer Networks. This network typology has a strong connection with the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA), current European Urban Initiative, where the urban praxis acquired by cities that benefited from UIA will be replicated and adapted to new territorial contexts. Regarding Maia, the city of Getafe will coordinate and support us on the topic "Urban Intelligence and Energy Poverty". Can private-public partnerships be the answer to challenges governments can't face alone? Think of this: in times of great need, it’s often the most unexpected alliances that bring solutions. When Australia tackled the complex issue of asylum seekers in Nauru, success didn’t just come from policy—it came from partnerships. Government resources combined with the agility and expertise of private companies created something transformative. Locals found employment and gained essential skills. The community’s engagement wasn’t just a bonus; it was the backbone of sustainable change. Fast forward to today, and we see similar approaches taking shape in places like Palau, where private sector companies step in to do what traditional means can’t. This is a proven practice. Companies like Critical Operations Group (COG) and KVG are stepping into roles that bridge the gap, ensuring resilience and growth through collaboration. Public-private partnerships create impact beyond economics—they create legacy. Curious about how these partnerships could drive sustainable solutions in your region? Let’s continue the conversation. We are proud to partner with C40 Cities and Mayors Migration Council to introduce our latest report - Good Green Jobs and Labor Migration: Opportunities for Urban Leaders. By 2050, 216 million people are expected to be internally displaced due to climate change, worsening climate impacts and insufficient investment in adaptation. And while cities are increasingly on the frontline of challenges they are also often at the forefront of innovative solutions. This report details how urban targeted investments and policies at the intersection of climate change and migration can create opportunities for all. Through examples from cities around the world, we demonstrate successful strategies for integrating migrants into the green economy, showing tangible benefits such as improved working conditions and increased economic inclusion. Cities like Milan and Accra are leading the way with innovative solutions to address the unique challenges faced by new arrivals. Milan’s Action Plan Against Energy Poverty is already boosting employment in key green sectors, while Accra's CLEAN project tackles urgent issues like work permits to foster financial inclusion for newcomers. These examples prove that with the right investments in resilience and green jobs, we can achieve a fair and inclusive transition that leaves no one behind. This report is a valuable resource for urban leaders seeking to develop policies that promote sustainable development and social equity. Indeed, embracing migration as a fundamental aspect of human behavior is crucial. Throughout history, people have migrated worldwide for various reasons. In the case of skilled healthcare workers moving from LMICs to the Global North, an innovative global health workforce policy is essential. This policy should focus on training, capacity building, and creating return investment opportunities to actively and meaningfully engage expatriate professionals. The presence of an enabling political system is often the determining factor in addressing health workforce shortages in LMICs like Ethiopia. The failed system is evident in the national paradox of a shortage of doctors coexisting with doctors struggling to secure employment - highlighting market & government failure, with significant need-based shortages and still a surplus of labor in the market.

No, development in poor countries will not decrease emigration; rather the opposite! As Ronald Skeldon famously stated: "Migration IS development". In fact, we have to turn our entire understanding of human mobility upside down, showing the need to conceptualize migration as an intrinsic - and therefore largely inevitable - part of broader processes of social transformation, rather than ideological views of migration as 'problem to be solved' or as a 'solution to problems'. https://lnkd.in/e8ntSxk2
