If your child can navigate YouTube to find their favorite videos, they can use an AAC device! 📲🎥 There are no prerequisites for AAC. At Speak Speech Therapy, we meet each child where they are by unlocking their communicative potential through total communication, including low—and high-tech AAC. By providing the tools and support each patient needs SST speech therapists partner with caregivers and families to create functional communication systems for each child. Always presume competence and provide access to functional communication for all speech-impaired individuals. Let's help to give the next generation of autistic individuals a voice through AAC. #AACForAutism #SpeakSpeechTherapy #HoustonSLP #Speechies #SLPA #SLP2Be

If good therapy requires both word and image how do we harness this understanding in training family therapists? In preparing for my workshop in Sydney which aims to teach practical skills to engage and work with children in their families, I have been exploring this question. One resource is a book published in 1990 by Ros Draper and her colleagues in Britain entitled 'Teaching Family Therapy'. It contains a number of exercises designed to teach theoretical concepts and the skills required to apply these. I have been interested to explore ways of teaching engagement with children, age appropriate questioning, analysis of the system which makes sense of the symptom and delivery of advice. It has been both challenging and enjoyable to design activities which teach these skills to practitioners while helping them retain the joy and spontaneity that working with children requires. https://lnkd.in/gkk3_vvm

Creating trauma-informed schools does not mean everyone on campus has to have a therapy degree. However, it does mean everyone is equipped to provide safe spaces for staff and children to grow, learn, and heal. #traumahealing #traumainformed #healingjourney #teachersupport #studentsupport #schoolleadership #teameffort #youmatter #professionaldevelopment #teacherwellbeing #mentalwellness

At PTS, we know that students benefit the most when schools operate as a therapeutic ecosystem. To help you introduce therapy without the therapist at the classroom level, we've put together several resources that allow you to help more students in less time. https://lnkd.in/eWZz4CDy #TeacherResources #SchoolResources

Useful checklist from our friends at TACA to clarify and understand the requirements of special education while navigating the public education system and other educational options. #AutismEducation #checklist https://lnkd.in/gVgAeRzT I particularly appreciate the reminder that behaviors are often an expression of underlying medical issues.
