Happy Friday to everyone except those that assume every problem is a controls problem. #ControlsHumor When something in your process changes and your system shuts down safely, please remember, that wasn't a control system failure - it was a control system success. Your process control should be written to ensure safety first, quality second, and running no matter what never. Your control system should only operate in known and accepted parameters - anything else should fail safe. Next time your control system shuts down unexpectedly, take a moment to thank your programmer, then ask them to help you audit the logic, find the first out, and resolve the problem - mechanical, electrical, or yes, even controls related. We're all on the same team. If you are facing nuisance alarming, unexpected shut downs, or can't determine why your system isn't operating efficiently, reach out and I'm happy to take a courtesy look at your system.

Let's talk about commissioning and dispel some misconceptions. Customers want their equipment to go through install, testing, startup, and "commissioning". However, commissioning is actually all of that. Its a process review that captures and verifies all of the above including verification of emergency exits. .. . . . yeah, how many people do that? Quite often customers think they are being sold a commissioning package, but it is not; instead they usually just get testing and some startup checks prior to energization. The easiest way to verify you are having your gear commissioned is the creation of two main things: 1) a process plan for the commissioning team to outline all requirements and in what order and 2) a checklist and process for approval of the owner for the final turnover of the project from commissioning to owner. These two docs ensure the proper operation and commitment of the commissioning team and its obligation to the owner. If you are unsure, read the NETA ECS. It spells out all the "standard" requirements. There may be more that specific manufacturers require, but use it as a guide and you should be fine.
