Newly released data from the University of Michigan and The Michigan Daily reveals that textbook costs can reach nearly $300 for a single class, with 100-level and language classes having the highest average single-material prices and material costs, respectively. Meanwhile, digital textbook prices average over 37% cheaper than new print versions. Inclusive Access and Equitable Access programs from RedShelf not only help colleges and universities provide students with more affordable, digital-first access options, they can level the playing field so that students don't feel the need to choose majors due to cost differences or make difficult decisions between acquiring materials or paying other expenses. All this while giving the bookstore and campus more control over student and faculty experience, and improving student performance and retention. https://lnkd.in/gMh-wDDD #highereducation #studentsuccess #affordableaccess #redshelf

U.S. ARTICLE: E-textbooks are more popular than ever, despite faculty’s distrust of them. ---- Distrust? Not sure why you would *distrust* a digital edition of your chosen text? 🤔 When I teach, I find the etextbook option super easy and convenient for students, particularly as it's readily available from the library. If anything I rely on it being accessible (as the book in print is very pricey) and it gives the student the option to read the book in whatever format they are most comfortable. The article says "nearly half (41 percent) think physical textbooks are better for learning." So it's not a distrust of the etextbook itself - it's more a belief about student learning and education in a digital vs analog world and what works best. ---- https://lnkd.in/gSTUESkw

“…academics face significant problems in identifying good OER textbooks,” writes William H. Walters, Executive Director of the Library at Manhattan University . He attributes this, in part, to the low quality of online #OER directories. His recent study of OER textbook directories provides comparative information and identifies three as “especially useful”: B.C. Open Collection, LibreTexts Commons, and the Open Textbook Library. 📚 Learn more about this study in the open access, peer-reviewed paper, "Finding Free OER Textbooks Online: Untangling the Web." https://lnkd.in/gZb6bden BCcampus LibreTexts

"Textbooks cost too much." "Students never read textbooks; they just Google it." These are two reasons to embrace open education resources (OER). OER are basically #openaccess #textbooks that are freely available to #students, teachers, and the general public. Making textbooks freely available removes price barriers to student success, and should ensure more equitable outcomes. Posting it online allows you to reach more people with your publication. I have used various forms of OER in my classes for years with great results! If you're a #student, what has your experience been like with OER? If you're a #teacher, what questions do you have about OER?
