In a historic first, renowned kayakers Adrian Mattern, Dane Jackson, Kalob Grady, and Bren Orton achieved a groundbreaking feat by completing the first-ever descent of Gabon’s Ivindo River. This untamed waterway, one of Africa’s most mysterious natural wonders, presented the team with unforgiving rapids, including the mighty Kongou Falls' 3-kilometer-long cascade and the treacherous Tsengue Leledi. Documented in the thrilling new film Gabon Uncharted: Sending Ivindo Falls, now streaming on Red Bull TV, this 145-kilometer, 10-12 day journey showcases the team's incredible resilience, teamwork, and deep respect for the environment. Their expedition wasn’t just about conquering rapids; it was about preserving the pristine beauty of the Ivindo River. From navigating towering waterfalls to using cutting-edge drone technology, the team captured stunning visuals that highlight nature’s wild grandeur. This historic journey not only ushers in a new chapter in kayaking but also underscores the urgent need to protect Africa's most untouched landscapes. The red kite (Milvus milvus) is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards, and harriers. The species currently breeds only in Europe, though it formerly also bred in west Asia and northwest Africa.[1][3] Historically, it was only resident in the milder parts of its range in western Europe and northwestern Africa, whereas all or most red kites in northern mainland Europe wintered to the south and west, some also reaching western Asia, but an increasing number of northern birds now remain in that region year-round.[1] Vagrants have reached north to Finland and south to Israel, Libya and Gambia.

During a recent underwater expedition in the Atacama Trench off the coast of Chile, scientists uncovered a remarkable creature at depths over 8,000 meters: the munnopsid isopod, often called the "deep sea spider." This unique crustacean thrives in extreme oceanic conditions and features 2 to 3 pairs of long legs for walking on the seafloor, along with 3 pairs of shorter, paddle-like legs for swimming. Its distinctive swimming technique allows it to propel itself or slow its descent, functioning almost like a parachute in the water. The Atacama Trench is a unique ecosystem marked by total darkness, immense pressure, and frigid temperatures, supporting specialized marine life. The munnopsid plays a vital role as a scavenger, feeding on decaying organic matter and animal carcasses. This behavior not only cleans the ocean floor but also recycles nutrients and may impact deep-sea carbon burial.

In Africa, when people go on safari, rangers and safari guides often talk about the "African Big Five". These coveted animal species are the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo. The success of a safari is often measured by how many of the Big Five one has seen. Similarly, in our own lives, we can define what success means to us by discovering our personal "Big Five". These five things represent what we want to do, see, or experience before we die. If we manage to achieve these five things before our life ends, we can look back and be proud that we have realized our personal Big Five. In this way, we have defined our own success and lived a successful life. The central message is that we can set the standards for our own success. It is about pursuing our dreams and goals and leading a fulfilling life according to our own vision. Contact me if you are interested in finding your Big Five For Life.
