When Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell joined the U.S. Fire Administration in 2021, the agency primarily focused on wildland fires, overlooking the impact on communities. During her tenure, the agency has expanded their focus to study fire in urban areas, firefighter health, new innovation, and more. Citing recent catastrophic fires in Paradise and Lahaina, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell shares how they are activating various technologies to have the greatest impact: from sniffing sensors to measuring residential fuel load, to community education. What is a High Injury Network (HIN)? Do you live near a HIN? A HIN is a collection of streets where a disproportionate number of crashes that result in someone being killed or severely injured occur. Regionally, 41% of traffic deaths occur on only 2% of the roadways. The average posted speed of a HIN segment is 43 mph, but the average travel speed is 53 mph. 53% of the HIN is located within a Disadvantaged Community. Visit the Vision Zero Central Florida hub site and explore the high injury networks in your area and how their safety scores are calculated. This data is important in identifying and prioritizing safety projects. https://bit.ly/VZHIN
