6:30 AM Thoughts: A Memo to Creatives and Employers
I know it’s Christmas Eve, and you’re probably wondering, What are you doing on LinkedIn right now? But this moment of reflection feels important.
Last week, I graduated from Sarah Lawrence & Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London through a joint program focused on culture, criticism, and creation. After spending five years building my own company in the creative industry, I went back to school because I was scared. My mentors told me I needed a degree to succeed, and I listened.
Now, as I scroll through job postings, I feel more embedded in a system that wasn’t built for me than ever before. Before I had this degree, I still had the same resilience, grit, and self-belief that allowed me to work with brands like InstagramBeautyblenderSoho House & Co etc, landing activations purely through perseverance. So why, after six years of acquiring knowledge and a degree, do I feel less significant? Less capable? Less out of the box?
This morning, I woke up reflecting on what it means to be ready for the creative industry. The truth? The grit, passion, and resilience forged through years of work, exposure, and perseverance mean more than any degree ever could. That inherent experience—the kind you earn by navigating challenges, embracing curiosity, and creating unapologetically—feels empowering.
It’s bittersweet (especially after doing the work) to realize that this resilience, this nuanced understanding of the world, carries more weight than anything printed on a certificate. But it’s also invigorating. My degree is not a crutch—it’s a symbol of a body of work. The resilience I’ve built alongside it feels like a second, equally vital credential. from this perspective It makes me feel more capable, deserving, and ready than ever.
To employers: the creative you need aren’t defined by a piece of paper. The world is shifting—culturally, economically, and creatively—and we are here already living at the intersection of these nuances. We’re not just qualified; we’re adaptive, insightful, and been navigating a system that wasn’t built for us and thriving despite it.
To creatives: your experience is your power. Whether you have a degree, are working on one, or have taken a completely different route, don’t let anyone take away what you’ve built. The stories you’ve collected, the risks you’ve taken, and the work you’ve put in to get here are what make you unstoppable.
So here I am, ready to face the world with my “resilience degree” and my college degree. Ready to dismantle stereotypes. Ready to empower communities. Ready to inspire the next generation of creatives and trailblazers.
To the employers who are serious about innovation: are you ready for us?
