Fantastic article by Mark Ritson! I’m glad to see I’m not alone in advocating for a proper understanding of marketing—it’s far more than just advertising or digital campaigns. I would even say that marketers are responsible for the 4Ps. While we often collaborate with Sales or Production on certain decisions, if consumers aren’t satisfied with a product, it’s usually Marketing that shoulders the blame. From the product development to the launch phase, even when our products are already at the end of their life cycle, they must always meet customer needs better than the competition. And who else knows the market well enough to deliver the best possible product or service? I agree with Mark Ritson’s point about beer brands being a great example of how essential marketing is to creating customer delight with an outstanding product. In the case of beer, the contributions of Production and Sales are crucial—whether it’s sourcing top-quality ingredients or training bartenders to pour and serve beer properly, their roles are indispensable to delivering that experience.
