What career do you truly want to pursue? Well, I love the idea of proof projects to accelerate your results. These take you beyond talking with people to self-contained pieces of work that demonstrate your knowledge and ability to add value to others. This approach can help you stand out from the crowd, build your credibility and open doors. It helps you stand out because you've moved into action. You're not just thinking about it – you're building projects and and letting people know. Here’s how that worked out for a recent client. An IT executive with a track record of success leading large teams, he was transitioning to his third chapter and was planning to include mentoring and coaching in his portfolio of activities moving forward. He took a coaching course which gave him professional accreditation and an expanded network. Then he created an opportunity to be interviewed for a podcast and he posted it on his LinkedIn profile. As well, he started writing and publishing articles on Medium. When a part-time role became available with a major provider of executive leadership development services, he applied and was successful in landing a paid role in a new field. It goes to show that when you move into action pursuing something that excites you, you move so much faster.

What's the one thing you need as a senior leader, yet it can feel impossible to define? It's... Executive Presence. You needn't have happened... but you did. How many weeks do you think the average person gets in a lifetime? You might get 4,000 weeks if you live to 80, or maybe 5,217 if you live to 100. The outrageous brevity of this life compels us to know that there is a time to work so we can be proud of what we build and something to show for the years on this planet. As an executive coach, I've had the privilege of guiding senior leaders through the complexities of their roles. One critical skill I developed as Chief of Staff at AT&T is how to effectively brief a leader in 30 minutes or less. By the way, these work for any level of leader no matter who you are prepping to meet with. Here are 6 strategies that work: 1. 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 (from Stephen M. R. Covey’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 7 𝘏𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘌𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦): Start your briefing by clearly defining the desired outcome. This sets the direction for the conversation, helping the leader to quickly grasp the purpose and make informed decisions. 2. Bring out your personality when you speak in public! Many of you may have to give a short speech this month when addressing your teams, clients etc. at the end of the year. When I’m coaching my public speaking clients, bringing out your personality when you speak comes up as an important topic for discussion. How many times have you seen those “wooden” speakers who have no self-expression, speak in a slightly robotic, monotone manner and after 30 seconds, you’ve switched off from listening to whatever they have to say? I get it, public speaking can be scary for a lot of people and it’s a hard skill to master. However, the most important quality you can bring to your speaking is your uniqueness. Your personality plays a crucial role in how the audience will respond to your message. You don’t have to be all “rah, rah” out there like the extroverts, you can be your introvert self if that’s you, and be calm and measured. As long as you bring energy to your message so that it’s compelling, uplifting, meaningful, you show gratitude and above all it’s authentic, you’ll connect with your audience. Good luck! Reminder!
