Understand California's SB 1383 through this insightful and practical Modern Farmer article featuring our COO, Katlyn Marchini. "Passed in 2016, SB 1383 is California legislation that reduces emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills. It included a component that requires food recovery from food generators of a certain size—restaurants that seat more than 250, grocery stores, hospitals, schools, and more." https://lnkd.in/dr_CwshT #california #sb1383

It's happened to all of us - you're standing in the kitchen, staring at the date printed on your food packaging wondering if your food is still good for a few more days or if it needs to go in the trash today. More often than not, caution wins and we throw it out, because human health is paramount. While that is the right choice because human health IS the most important consideration, there is also a better option. Once again, California is leading the charge in reducing waste by increasing clarity and communication in their sell by dates. By clearly establishing what the dates on the packaging actually mean we can remove the guess work and plan accordingly. Hopefully this clarity will help keep food out of landfills. Remember though! If you cannot reduce your waste, you can always recycle it by placing it in your compost bin. #reducereuserecycle https://lnkd.in/eQ-p_WEg

California takes a decisive stand against food waste with the enactment of Assembly Bill 660. By banning "sell-by" dates on food labels, this legislation seeks to clarify food expiration standards and reduce the amount of perfectly good food ending up in landfills. This move is the latest in a series of initiatives demonstrating California's commitment to tackling food waste. In our latest blog, we take a close look at the specifics of AB 660, trace the development of California's food waste policies, and explore the potential implications for similar efforts nationwide. California's legislature has passed a resolution calling on Congress to fix one of the biggest problems causing food waste: confusion over food date labels (aka the "expiration date" myth). Right now, consumers are left to guess at what information is intended by the date on the package. Americans need consistent date labels so that we stop tossing good food prematurely and so that there is more clarity on which foods are really a health concern. Standardizing food date labels has numerous environmental, health, and social benefits and is supported by a significant portion of the business community—it is a commonsense solution to an entrenched kitchen table issue that we can all get behind. https://lnkd.in/gjHdR5aj

Passed in 2016, SB 1383 aimed to reduce emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills. A key component of the law requires food recovery from large-scale food generators, such as restaurants with more than 250 seats, grocery stores, hospitals, schools, and similar entities. These organizations donate surplus food to reduce waste and help feed those in need. The regulations, which took effect in 2022, target food waste as a major contributor to landfill methane emissions, accounting for roughly a third of the total. With over one-fifth of California’s population facing food insecurity in 2020, recovering wasted food can also play a crucial role in addressing hunger.

California becomes the first US state to ban "sell by" dates on packaged foods with AB660. Although it seems minor, this is a great step toward reducing food waste!! Hopefully we as consumers can waste less food according to the "best if used by" and "use by" dates, starting July 1, 2026, without confusion from sell by dates. Up to 40% or more of all food waste in the US comes from homes, and a large portion of that being due to misunderstood expiration labels. Wasted food not only produces methane (a potent greenhouse gas) if thrown in the trash as it decomposes in landfills, but also requires land, water, and energy to harvest that then goes to waste. Minimizing your home food waste can improve your carbon footprint more than eating plant-based, using wind energy, or driving an electric car (thank you Fork Ranger for the insight). https://lnkd.in/emhwRshv https://lnkd.in/e_2pnZcg.
