As #temperatures and #decibel levels rise amidst the polling season, & with all the hype about the elections + each of us having our views on the future of the nation; here is a quiz question: Do you know how many #districts India has & what is special about them?
(resist the urge to google :)
#UnpackingRegions Part 2:
Each state of India is divided into sub-units called districts. They are each an embodiment of the nation’s possibilities and also bring with them special needs, challenges and opportunities. Each #district has a designated #budgeting and planning exercise that takes place each year, similar to the #AOP exercise followed by our businesses. And how many districts does India have — 806. Yes, as of last count, Eight Hundred and Six local units!
No wonder #planning is hard…(and yes the discussion on Panchayats & ULBs is for another post and another day)!
#Spotlight on Select Districts: It is the smaller units that hold the key to India's economic diversification. Here's a glimpse into some of these hidden gems and their sources of competitive advantage
#District, State: *Competitive Advantage
#Koraput, Odisha: *Aluminium (bauxite reserves), Handicrafts (metalwork, textiles), Eco-tourism
#Palakkad, Kerala : *Agriculture (rice, coconut, spices), Ayurveda, Handloom (silk sarees)
#Mahabubnagar, Telangana: *Pharmaceuticals, Granite industry, Handloom (Pochampally sarees)
#Kutch, Gujarat: *Handicrafts (embroidery, pottery), Textiles (bandhani), Tourism
#Kodagu,Karnataka: *Coffee plantations, Spices (cardamom), Tourism (hill stations)

Want to dive deeper? Think about optimizing the #potential of each district! It is here that the idea of “#granularity” becomes useful. By focusing on such details it is possible to distinguish unique strengths of the regions and stimulate their inclusive and sustainable development. The big growth narrative in #emergingmarkets cannot happen without this.
Let's embark on a #collaborative exploration! This poll season let us commit to knowing our countries better. Do #share the name of a state/region/ district, or a pattern that ignites your curiosity in the #comments below.
#Author’s note: Our book “Regional Economic Diversity” #RED talks about how varied India actually is, and makes a case for emerging markets to realise their true potential - by enhancing regional access. Would love to hear from you. Book & website links in bio.
