As time passes, historic events are often reshaped due to national interests or more easily available records. This sometimes results in different perspectives of the real facts. The story of the D-Day Normandy Landings on 6th June 1944 is no exception where British Forces outnumbered every other nation on that day, but where fewer people today actually know this. He will replace outgoing Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar. Admiral Kumar will retire on April 30. Vice Admiral Tripathi is currently the Vice Chief of the Navy. “The government has appointed Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, as the next Chief of the Naval Staff with effect from the afternoon of April 30,” the Defense Ministry said. <!-- /8323530/Khabar_Desktop_VDO_1X1 --> Joined Indian Navy on July 1, 1985 Vice Admiral Tripathi was born on 15 May 1964 and joined the Indian Navy on 1 July 1985. A communications and electronic warfare expert, Vice Admiral Tripathi has had a long and distinguished career spanning nearly 30 years. Before assuming the post of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, he had been the Flat Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. Has taken command of INS Vinash He also commanded INS Vinash. As Rear Admiral, he has been the Fleet Officer Commanding of the Eastern Fleet. He has also been the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala. An alumnus of Sainik School and National Defense Academy Khadakwasla, Vice Admiral Tripathi has also undergone courses at the Naval War College, Goa and the Naval War College, USA. He has also been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Navy Medal. The special thing is that Dinesh Tripathi is assuming the post at a time when Indian warships are active amid increased activities of Houthi rebels. So far, Indian warships have responded to 20 such incidents. Here, the three are also intensifying activities in the Indian maritime area and collusion with Pakistan also remains a matter of concern for India. Two incidents of violence from Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but both very different from the other except for those left dead by it. The killing of 17 people deemed terrorists by the Pakistani military on Saturday in Bannu, North Waziristan, underscores the steady uptick in fighting the region is seeing following the breakdown of ties with the Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan. As Sharat Sabharwal, former high commissioner to Pakistan (2009-13) explained on The Gist, the situation here can be directly traced to the “ideological affinities and linkages” that bring together the Taliban and groups like the TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan). “The Taliban has been telling the Pakistanis go talk to the TTP, which is what Imran Khan did when he was prime minister but that approach got discredited as it allowed the TTP to regroup.” As for the second incident of violence in Kurram bordering Afghanistan, that has once again revealed an ugly and increasingly volatile sectarian fault line, meaning Sunni vs Shia. Sabharwal argues that while the fault line is an old one, “it is accentuated by the fact that Shias have been in possession of most of the land and there are tribal rivalries. When I was deputy high commissioner (in Pakistan) in the 1990s, a lot of killing used to take place from time to time.” But these are on Pakistan’s periphery. The current struggle is between Imran Khan’s PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) and the army fronted of course by the civilian government of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Nitin A Gokhale WhatsApp Channel “Sharif is complying with the wishes and dictates of the army, so it’s a military regime except you do not have a man in uniform as martial law administrator or the president but he takes all critical decisions including on economic matters,” Sabharwal says. Although the recent march on Islamabad by the PTI fizzled out, the wonder is Imran Khan despite sitting in prison for over a year, still commands the loyalty of his party, and remain the most popular politician in Pakistan today. “Cracks have been reported from time to time (in the PTI) and he’s gone backwards, making compromises, that’s a sign of people not carrying out all the instructions of the boss.” The big question is about Gen Asim Munir, the army chief, who has history with Imran Khan (the latter had him removed as ISI chief in 2019 because he was investigating corruption by Bushra Bibi, Imran’s wife). As long as he’s around, Imran will probably have to reconcile to sitting in jail, unless he’s able to strike a deal with Munir. #Navy Chief on a Three Day Visit to Greece #Greece is very important for India as it acts as a counter balance to #Turkey. Greece and Turkey have been regional adversaries in the #Aegean sea, both asserting claims over their borders in the Sea. We should not forget that Greece and India have common security concerns in the #Meditation Sea. India can help Greece in the field of #cyber security and Greece can assist India wrt merchant vessels. Greece can become an important partner in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor launched during India’s #G20 presidency. The other common areas of growth can be in renewable energy, infrastructure, #ports and #shipping, and logistics. The position of Greece is the world map is such that it has considerable dominance over the #mediterranean sea. It is also a gateway to Europe. Greece is member of #NATO and has a rich cultural heritage. India on the other hand is looking to expand trade ties westwards. India also is considering better #defence ties with countries that have similar ideology. The scope of defence ties with Greece are hence immense. Over the past few years, Greece has given importance to defence cooperation and military exercises between the two countries. Greece has always backed India’s position on the Kashmir issue. India and Greece have common concerns wrt maritime security and implementation of #UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This law is being violated by Turkey and China in the #Eastern Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific almost every day. It will be in the scheme of things if in the future India and Greece build upon the already existing defence ties. India can always look forward to export defence equipment particularly anti drone systems to Greece keeping in view that #Turkey has built an extensive Drone system which can be used to dominate various islands which are otherwise part of Greece. India can also seek help in ship building technology from Greece, as Greece has an age- old tradition of making boats and ships. A joint collaboration between #Mazgaon Dockyard and #Skaramanga shipyard can give Indian shipbuilding a major flip. Skaramanga has expertise in ship repair and maintenance. It looks like in the the future India and Greece can shape #Global #Geopolitics in a way that it suits each other's countries interests. Close ties between the two countries could be beneficial for both. Greece can definitely balance the negative sentiment that Turkey is trying to generate against #India at various international forums. Greece can also facilitate India's ambition to trade with #EU via its own maritime fleet and favourable trade routes that provide India exclusive access to #European Markets.
