I sometimes get asked how much it cost to build the USS Alabama (BB-60). According to the source below, it cost $80 million in 1942 dollars. After adjusting for inflation, that is $1.5 billion in today’s dollars. This is close to the cost of a Flight III Arleigh Burke class destroyer which is less than a quarter the size. However, comparing the two by dollars/pound is like using this metric to compare the cost of a steel safe with a desktop computer. Silicon is far more expensive per pound than steel - and software doesn’t weigh anything at all. In fact, when it comes to high technology, the inverse is now true - the less something weighs, the more it might cost.
