Jennifer Rayner (Australia) talks about how Dry Eye Disease is a progressive disease that can cause irreversible damage if left untreated. Patient reported outcomes – Should we be rethinking causation? The measurement of patient reported outcomes is not philosophically neutral and as a result brings with it philosophical commitments, especially but not exclusively about causation. Health professionals have used evidence-base medicine EBM to guide clinical decision-making for the last three decades with little emphasis on patient narrative which is very low in the hierarchy of evidence. However, critics have suggested that EBM focuses on groups of patients and does not consider the differences between each patient, subgroup analyses, or patient values. Yet, the positivist scientific framework remains the cornerstone of patient reported outcome measures (PROM) development and application with its focus on the same cause and effect. This commentary proposes that a causal singularism approach is a more person-centred approach to the understanding of the patient’s PROM score. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e53wrPN7
