Alminica is partner in the new EU EIC Pathfinder project rePowerSiC that is a four year project with a budget of 4 MEUR. The project rePowerSiC (SiC-based high-efficiency and high-power laser beam space systems) was selected in the latest EIC Pathfinder Challenge call that has focus on specific challenges such as solar energy in space, digitalisation in construction and efficient cooling, among others. rePowerSiC develops a laser converter capable of transmitting wireless energy in the kilowatt (kW) range with an efficiency of more than 80%. This technology will allow the wireless transmission of energy over long distances using high-power lasers, increasing efficiency, reducing weight and costs. The project contributes to reduce the size of batteries and extending the useful life of space devices. The space technology can be applied on Earth by transferring energy on demand and without the need for cables. Examples of sectors are agriculture and industry by the use of aerial or aquatic drones, as well as to allows access to remote areas on Earth (like energy to remote sensors). The implementation will lead to the creation of new markets by significantly reducing dependence on batteries, also contributing to reducing electronic waste. Alminica contributes by silicon carbide materials crystal growth by close space physical vapor transport (CS-PVT) method with an industrial approach for PVT growth and a green technology. Alminica is also SME project partner in transfer of knowledge to facilitate impact and exploitation for new business creation. For rePowerSiC Alminica is currently recruiting a crystal growth professional with industrial interest/experience. Follow the project: rePowerSiC Read more about the project: https://lnkd.in/dTxjncE8 More information will be on the rePowerSiC web. 🌟 Engineering Day 2024: Uniting AI and Human Creativity 🌟 I had the privilege of attending Engineering Day 2024 in Stockholm, where the theme focused on how AI and human creativity are coming together to shape the future. The conference was a thought-provoking experience, shedding light on how AI transforms our work and job opportunities and drives innovation across industries. One of the key insights I gained was the growing shift in the Nordic energy sector. Many companies now prioritise nuclear power plant projects as a cornerstone for future energy security, often ahead of renewable options like wind and solar. This trend highlights an interesting strategic direction and raises questions about balancing sustainability, scalability, and reliability in energy planning. I’m excited to continue exploring how AI and energy innovation can work hand in hand to create a more sustainable future. What are your thoughts on the intersection of AI and the evolving energy landscape? https://engineeringday.se/ #EngineeringDay2024 #Innovation #NuclearEnergy #RenewableEnergy #NordicEnergy #nyteknikevents

My first Paper “Photovoltaic power Forecasting using sky images and sun motion” is accepted to IEEE ICAASP 2024 and now fully available in their Open Preview library 🍾 (https://lnkd.in/ecM5dgbp) For those that don't feel like reading a 5-Page technical Paper, heres a quick breakdown → Images of the sky are used to train a neural network (CNN) to predict solar panel energy production with the SUNSET Nowcast and Forecast models developed Stanford Researchers → Partly or highly cloudy days are the most difficult to forecast → From the sky images we deduced additional information about sun and cloud position such as image illumination, sun position, cloud segmentation, sun area mean pixel intensity, to add to the model as input → Including sun position and sun area mean pixel intensity (SAMPI) improves the models performance and stability Our work underscores two key insights 1. We improved PV predictions using simple image processing techniques that can be integrated into any pipeline. Accurate PV production forecasting is vital to guarantee a stable electricity grid with more and more volatile renewables integrated each day. 2. Black box neural networks dont deduce all the necessary information. By adding the most essential information to determine PV production we obtained better results, indicating that the model was not able to fully understand the task at hand and extract all required information. Thank you again to Antonio Agudo for the collaboration. It was a great pleasure working together.

Insufficient diligence when planning multi-million-euro infrastructure can cause oversized budgets and costly delays 💸🐌 District heating projects are particularly vulnerable to such risks, due to significant uncertainty in the early stages of projects: ❓ How many customers will actually connect to the network — or adopt individual heat pumps? ❓ How is the layout affected by last-minute connections? ❓ How will retrofitting and climate change influence heat demand in 10 years? ❓ What if gas prices increase after deployment? While there is no silver bullet, Urbio's AI-powered generative design enables you to optimize for profitability or impact by: ✅ exploring different scenarios quickly and at no extra cost ✅ incorporating new information as the project evolves Contact us if you'd like to discover how Urbio can support your projects! ⬇️ #AI #ClimateTech #DHN

In Race to Build A.I., Tech Plans a Big Plumbing Upgrade The spending that the industry’s giants expect artificial intelligence to require is starting to come into focus — and it is jarringly large. ^^^^^^ My work on thermal power satellites got the estimated cost down to 3 cents per kWh. Without the 50% transmission loss, 1.5 cents per kWh is possible. In addition to the huge radiator area, heeded for the power generation, it would require around half again as much area to get rid of the computation heat. On the other hand, the design does not need a power transmission antenna. Further, it could be placed in an orbit lower than GEO inclined more than 23 deg to avoid the shadow of the Earth and the thermal shock from the shadow. Thermal radiators are arranged as pairs of tapered plastic tubes filled with 20 deg C condensing steam. The tubes make a planer surface facing solar north/south and shaded from the sun. Concentrater mirrors focus sunlight into boilers or PV. Power generation and computation would happen at the ends of the tube pairs. There is an animation of a 1.5 GW radiator about 4:30 into https://lnkd.in/gycP2ZcM That may be larger than any data center on earth. Data centers are already generating a fair amount of NIMBY pushback. This is a way to push computation off Earth. There is an extremely speculative safety reason to move AI off Earth. If the AIs ever went rogue and were already in space, they might leave planetary surfaces deep in gravity wells alone. Keith
