Rapida at SHIFT Summit: How technology is transforming infrastructure maintenance – real cases and challenges. Drones and AI are reshaping how we address the issues of aging infrastructure and skyrocketing maintenance costs. But how exactly? Which problems have already been solved, and where is there room for new solutions? At the SHIFT Summit, we will: 🔹 Present our platform and real-world case studies from Israel and beyond. 🔹 Discuss the challenges our global clients face and how we tackle them. Join Eli Kovler and Eugene Romanovsky to share key priorities, practical goals and skepticism. After all, thoughtful questions and real-world examples help us ground technology in reality. 👉 Be part of the conversation, and let’s focus on what matters! 🗓 December 18, 2024 📍 Hangar 11, Tel Aviv ConTech - Construction Innovation Center

I think the phase of doubt about AI is behind us. We’re now heading into a big phase of implementing AI capabilities into familiar workflows, as well as making more radical changes that break long-standing work patterns – even in civil engineering. Hopefully, I’ll bring back a few new ideas from this conference on how exactly this can happen. It’s still about user experience. I’ll stay optimistic that AI will help us UX tinkerers hear ‘Let’s give it a try’ more often instead of ‘That’s impossible.

As a startup HyFlux is keen to expand our network with Prof Rinze Benedictus and solve the system’s challenges of Sustainable Aviation. As he says “You can build a fantastic, sustainable airplane. But if there’s no airfield where it can re-fuel, because it’s hydrogen powered, and if it can’t land, then it won’t be used. You’ve just created a museum piece. You must address the entire system.” 🔹What does it take to achieve sustainable aviation?🔹How to accelerate innovation? 🔹And what can we do for existing aircraft? In this Pioneering Tech video, Rinze Benedictus (Professor Aerospace Materials & Structural Integrity) and Prof Marios Kotsonis (Professor Flow Control) provide the answers. TU Delft Pioneering Tech is the leading online platform for disruptors & decision makers. Providing news, analysis and insights, we show what is needed to accelerate radical innovation around break-through technologies and to make impact for a better society. 🇸🇪 🇳🇴 The MF Estelle, the first autonomous electric ferry, successfully completed a 373-mile remote-controlled journey across Stockholm's waters. Powered by onboard solar panels, this energy-efficient catamaran highlights a new era in sustainable maritime transport, operating without a human captain. Developed by Norwegian and Swedish teams, the ferry is a breakthrough in green technology and urban mobility. Future deployments aim to further expand autonomous, zero-emission ferries in cities worldwide. Source - Interesting Engineering 🇺🇸 Eviation's Alice, the world's first 4-ton battery-electric plane, will soon fly in the US, offering a 505-mile range on a 30-minute charge. With a maximum cruise speed of 287 mph, the nine-seat aircraft is set to revolutionize sustainable air travel. UrbanLink Air Mobility plans to deploy Alice as part of an all-electric transportation fleet in cities like Miami and Los Angeles, supporting the US goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Source - Interesting Engineering 🇺🇸 The US Air Force is funding Sierra Space's "Ghost" spacecraft, designed to deliver critical supplies anywhere on Earth within 90 minutes. Capable of staying in orbit for up to five years, Ghost features advanced thermal protection and can transport heavy payloads of up to 10 metric tons. This reusable system is expected to transform military and disaster-response logistics with on-demand, scalable delivery from space. Source - Interesting Engineering

Engineering the Future: Innovations Shaping 2024 As engineers and innovators, we live in a time of extraordinary challenges—and opportunities. This year is already marked by pivotal advances that will shape industries and redefine possibilities. A few remarkable breakthroughs that could transform industries and how we live are- · Supersonic Travel, Reimagined NASA's X-59 program is inching closer to quiet supersonic flights. Imagine crossing continents at breakneck speed without the deafening sonic booms. It's a step toward bringing high-speed travel back, but in a way that's both sustainable and practical for the future of aviation. · Tapping Earth's Heat for Energy Quaise Energy's ultra-deep geothermal drilling technology is pushing boundaries. They’re exploring depths of 20 km to access energy from the Earth's superheated rocks. If successful, this could provide a near-infinite supply of clean energy—and dramatically reduce reliance on fossil fuels. · Nature-Inspired Fluid Dynamics Sometimes, the best engineering solutions come from the natural world. Researchers at MIT have developed a water filtration system inspired by manta ray feeding mechanisms. It's a brilliant reminder that biomimicry holds the key to tackling issues like water scarcity while improving efficiency. · The UK’s Space Ambitions Closer to home, the UK’s space industry is on the rise. With SaxaVord Spaceport ready for vertical launches, we’re stepping into an exciting era of home-grown rocket launches, fostering innovation from companies like Skyrora, Orbex, and HyImpulse. It's incredible to see the UK cementing its role in global aerospace. These breakthroughs highlight the power of collaboration between researchers, engineers, and industries. They remind me why I fell in love with engineering in the first place—it’s about solving complex problems that impact not just the present, but generations to come. What recent innovation or research has caught your eye? I’d love to hear what’s inspiring others in our community.
