TRT = 20 YEARS ⏱ I’ve spent 20 years writing other people’s stories, and I’ve loved it! Now, the TRT (or Total Running Time for you non-TV folks) is up, and it’s time to write my story. I’ve decided to pursue a new challenge outside daily, on-air TV news. This career is truly a lifestyle – the long hours, weird schedules, working holidays, and constant hunt to find the next big story. I’ve been incredibly lucky to work for two of the best, family-owned television stations in the country. I’ve earned an Emmy and Murrow for my writing and visual storytelling. This profession is where I’ve met coworkers who have become some of my greatest, lifelong friends and supporters. But, it’s not all bright studio lights and glamour. It's a grind. I’ve seen people at their best and worst. I’ve covered communities in crisis in real-time on live TV. I’ve been in rooms with presidents of the most powerful country in the world and people fleeing persecution in their homelands. I’ve strived to tell all their stories with compassion, fairness, and accuracy. My passion for storytelling doesn’t end when this TRT counts down to my last day at WRAL in May. I’m actively looking for new ways to use the talents I’ve developed in multimedia communication, community engagement, crisis response, and people management. I’m thrilled to take on this new opportunity – whatever it may be. Now, let’s start writing my story… #RaleighPR #Raleigh #DurhamPR #Durham #RTP #PR #publicrelations #marcomm #storytelling #ContentCreation #Communications #digitalmedia #mediarelations #RDU #TriangleNC #journalism

So, we often hear ourselves and people saying that spending time on Netflix is like wasting it. Well, recently I quite disagree with it. As a writer, I think staying up-to-date and having a good command on the language is vital for me. And so, I have discovered a way of staying productive while having fun. I took a diary and put on this show called as, "The Designated Survivor". To my surprise, there was a a whole set of jargon that I was not familiar with. I paused during the show, did my research and started taking notes! Gradually, I started using the same in my content and it made a huge difference. So, how do you all make your fun time productive? Drop your thoughts in the comment section below! Let's help each other to grow!!! #netflix #makefunproductive #technicalwriting #jargon #stayinguptodate

Hemingway says grade 7. Grammarly says 100%. But the client’s readability tool? 61. At this point, I’m starting to think I need to write copy that’s part Shakespeare, part Tanmay Bhatt, and a little bit of emoji for good measure. 🎭📚 Is there a readability tool out there that knows I’ve had enough? Seriously considering my next career move: professional TV critic 📺 #copywritingwoes #readabilitystruggles #freelancelife #contentcreatorproblems #writingjourney

Mastering the Spotlight: The Art and Skill of Television Anchoring The captivating presence that commands attention, the unwavering poise under pressure, the ability to deliver news with clarity and authority – these are the hallmarks of a successful television anchor. But beyond the polished on-air persona lies a world of dedication, meticulous preparation, and a deep understanding of the ever-evolving media landscape. Television anchoring is more than just having a pretty face. Exceptional anchors possess a robust skillset that goes far beyond aesthetics. Vocal control, strong pronunciation, and the ability to modulate one's voice for emphasis are crucial tools in an anchor's arsenal. The ability to think on their feet is paramount, as live television is a dynamic environment. Eliciting insightful and engaging responses from interviewees is an art form that successful anchors have mastered. Strong questioning skills, active listening abilities, and the ability to navigate tense or challenging interviews are all essential. Establishing credibility and trust is perhaps the most valuable asset an anchor can possess However, technical skills alone do not define a great anchor. Certain intangible qualities are equally important. A genuine passion and a desire to communicate with the public are driving forces in this profession. Anchors also possess a thirst for knowledge and a natural curiosity that compels them to get to the bottom of the story. Empathy and emotional intelligence allow anchors to connect with viewers on an emotional level, fostering trust and engagement. Therefore, the core skills of clear communication, critical thinking, and a commitment to the integrity remain essential. #Storytelling #CommunicationSkills #PublicSpeaking #MediaIndustry #ContentCreation #SocialMediaSavvy #DigitalStorytelling

Starting out as a media personality doing TV presentations came with its unique perks. There was the initial shock of seeing myself for how I really look on TV and trying to find a balance for what works. ------------------------------------------ Questions and concerns like, "How do I smile next time", "How do I position my face next time", "What do I do differently next time", "...places to improve on," etc... I tell you for free, it was not a walk in the park. But then they say, experience is not really the best teacher, knowledge is. ---------------------------------------- So Here are some tips that helped me find success as a TV presenter and can help you too as you start out: 1. Be confident and outgoing. Confidence is key in any job, but especially in television where you are often in the spotlight. If you lack confidence, it will show through on camera and put viewers off. 2. Be natural and relaxed. Again, this comes down to being comfortable in front of the camera. The more relaxed you are, the better you will come across on screen. 3. Be well-prepared. Make sure you know your script, or prep or material inside out so that you can deliver it confidently and without hesitation. (there's a power in this though, once you've mastered the art - 👍🏻). 4. Be flexible and adaptable. Things change all the time on television, so you need to be able to roll with the punches and adapt accordingly. This could mean learning new script/material at short notice or changing your delivery style on the fly. I hope this helps! 📽️👍🏻 Hi, I am Gloria Kalu - I'm a Media Personality, TV/Radio Host, Voice Over Artist and Diction Coach/Trainer. Have you ever scrolled Netflix for 10, 15, 20+ minutes, unable to choose a movie to watch? 🕐🕑🕒 Felt paralyzed by decision overload? And the more you searched and tried to decide, the more you felt the weight of neural fatigue? 🤯 Do you recall how you came to a decision? What stood out and drew you in? You likely didn’t stop on each movie, read each description, and watch every trailer until your popcorn went stale. 🍿 You probably had a set of criteria, spent seconds on each title, and only looked deeper into the ones that met that initial criteria; genre, themes, actors and actresses, etc. Now imagine instead of a movie lover scrolling Netflix for a great movie, you're a recruiter reviewing resumes for an ideal job candidate. 🔎📄 What are the initial criteria that a recruiter is looking at to make a decision about you in seconds? 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀 ➡️Align these with the job you’re applying for. 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 ➡️No fluff or buzzwords. Make the top of your resume count. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝗯 ➡️If they only read one, what would you want them to know? Imagine your recruiter is fatigued by decision overload. Make their decision a no-brainer by focusing on those key elements, then making sure the rest of your resume demonstrates your abilities to solve the problems outlined in the job description. ✅

If you haven't watched Scoop on Netflix, then you should. The film brilliantly tells the story of Sam McAlister's determination to get the now-famous BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew. Scoop does a brilliant job in presenting Sam's work in the lead up to the interview. What was great is how it shares little details from her personal life, giving us a contrast of the life of a journalist. One movement is getting a call from Buckingham Palace where the focus is trying to get the interview and the other is heading home via a local Kebab shop to her mum and son. Yet, Scoop also tells the story of gamekeepers, Prince Andrew's Private Secrerary Amanda Thirsk and PR advisor Jason Stein that she brought in. Scoop is not just a story of Sam McAllister and the blockers that she faced within the BBC but also the story of the waterfall culture that exists/ed within the Palace where, as we are told, a non-comms person let BBC Newsnight get the Scoop, contrarory to advice from Jason Stein. The dynamic that also caught my eye is the one where Amanda allowed Newsnight in, against the advice of the of Jason Stein. That is a decision that many professional communicators have experienced in their careers. Decisions that highlight the lack of understand of not just the media, but strategic communications or reputation management. And yes, Prince Andrew's reputation was long gone before the interview. It just needed the extra push that Sam and the Newsnight team secured. #Scoop #journalism #publicrelations #communications https://lnkd.in/eqYTZhXa
