With the world generating 300 million tonnes of plastic annually, there is a critical need for more sustainable and recyclable alternatives. Biodegradable bio-packaging from agricultural waste could just be the solution. Developed by The University of Queensland's Dr Nasim Amiralian, packaging made from sugarcane trash could replace conventional plastic packaging items like berry punnets. “Key benefits of this technology include substantial reductions in waste and emissions, elimination of harmful chemicals through recyclable green solvents, enhanced biodegradability, and prevention of microplastic generation. These attributes position the packaging materials as ideal solutions for both earthy and marine environments, aligning with global environmental goals,” Dr Amiralian said. This new fibre-based packaging technology not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also utilises agricultural waste, thereby reducing landfill and greenhouse gas emissions. Did you know that only up to 10% of all plastic waste gets recycled? That was quite eye opening to me as I believed that most of the plastic waste, that lands in our (yellow) recycling bin would be re-used and re-purposed. At Aduro we can do better. Up to 70% of all plastic waste can be put into our process. Out comes virgin-like feedstock for new plastic products.
