Today was the most important day of my academic journey: the day of my final course defense. Honestly, I am very happy to have overcome all the difficulties that arose during these four years of struggle and to have developed a solution that truly helps people and makes a difference in their lives. My academic journey began in 2019 when I enrolled in the Computer and Information Engineering course. In a class of 50 students, only 9 were women. The first year was quite difficult for me as it was hard to adapt to the sudden change in the university's teaching methods. I didn’t know the curriculum or who my classmates were. Additionally, I was the only one without a computer, let alone internet access. I spent most of my time programming on a piece of paper at home, and the next day I would test my work on the computer of my good friend Helder Batalha. This went on for three long years. During all those years, I heard that this field wasn’t for me and that I should give up. I even heard, "Women in technology don't belong." But I knew that failure was not an option for me and that somehow, I had to succeed. In my fourth year, I managed to buy my first computer with the salary from my internship at the time and a small help from my father. It wasn’t the best, but it was what I could afford. By the fourth year, the number of students had significantly decreased; out of the 50 who started, only 10 remained, and I was the only woman left in my area. I write all of this to inspire the thousands of women who are starting in technology today and hear that this field is not for them. I love what InnovateHer UK are doing to promote gender equality in tech careers! More women and non-binary people in STEM is the key to a more innovative industry. Why don't more women and non-binary people start careers in tech? I think more women and non-binary people don't start tech careers because of lack of representation and early education. My daughters had no tech lessons until secondary school which is too late in my opinion. Early years are key to nurturing interest in STEM. At BAE Systems Digital Intelligence we have Employee Resource Groups as part of our commitment to being an inclusive culture. Our Gender Equality Network (GEN) is for all employees who believe everyone should have the opportunity and support to succeed in their career regardless of gender. ⭐ Happy Friday, everyone! We wanted to share some exciting insights from McKinsey on addressing the diversity gap in tech. The diversity gap in technology can be examined from two key perspectives. First, many young women may perceive the industry as an exclusive 'boys' club,' believing that unless they follow a traditional educational and career path, there is no place for them. This perception likely contributes to the fact that in 2021, only 22% of computing degrees were awarded to women. However, this is just one part of the equation (Spitz, 2023). The second perspective focuses on the structural challenges within the industry. As mentioned in McKinsey’s interview with Judith Spitz, Ph.D. founder of Break Through Tech, not all young people have the luxury of participating in hackathons or attending top-tier universities. Some individuals must shoulder adult responsibilities early in life, limiting their ability to invest fully in their future careers. This does not reflect a lack of potential but rather unequal access to opportunities—a distinction that is crucial. Companies should consider rethinking their hiring practices to better evaluate potential, rather than relying solely on traditional markers of privilege. Programs like 'Break Through Tech' are exemplary in this regard. Recognizing that internships may not always be the first step for everyone, this initiative offers alternative pathways for individuals to demonstrate their capabilities before entering the industry. Through this program, over 1,000 women have secured internships or full-time positions, a promising indication of progress.
