In light of all of the bad news that we hear lately, I thought that another good news story about people TAKING ACTION was called for: There are many abandoned, leaking oil wells in this country, all of which leak methane. Three high school students decided to do something rather than rant about the issue. The students raised $11,000 and the well is closed. A remarkable day. We just launched a satellite! Yes, Environmental Defense Fund launched MethaneSAT. To tackle methane. Because methane is responsible for 30% of the increased temperature in the world (since it absorbs 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide.) MethaneSAT is the world's most advanced methane detecting satellite, delivering an unprecedented level of clarity and precision. The #OilAndGas sector is one of the largest sources of manmade methane emissions. 80% of this can be tackled with existing technology; and 45% of this can be done at net zero cost. #MethaneSAT will help shine the light on the problem and advance the oil and gas sector's progress towards the solution. Often times, the problems of climate change seem too big and complex to fix. This is not always the case; this is one of them. Methane management in oil & gas is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way of decarbonising. Also, climate change can't be addressed without addressing methane. In Lac Brochet, Manitoba, a remote First Nation community, we worked on remediating two sites contaminated with diesel. The project was part of a larger effort to reduce the community's reliance on diesel fuel for heating and power, moving them toward a more #sustainable energy future. Our team installed a groundwater cutoff wall to protect the nearby lake and carried out a chemical injection process to treat petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil and #groundwater. We also constructed an ex-situ land treatment area. By tackling contamination and helping the community transition to alternative energy, we’re proud to be making a lasting, positive impact.
