All of us who deal with KPIs day in and day out know the difference between a leading and lagging KPI. Some of you might be interested to know that one of the 1st examples of a leading KPI was a canary bird in a cage carried by miners when going into unexplored depths of a mine where amongst the many dangers, poisonous gas would be one. Lethal Carbon Monoxide being colourless and odourless , an early warning was needed. The canary in the cage acted as an early warning system, their discomfort giving the miner ample time to stop proceeding and get away. Sparrows too are the leading KPIs of the environmental health of the Urban Areas. Some of us may recall that the sparrow was ubiquitous in our growing up days even in the towns and cities. Today the Sparrow is becoming a rare sight in Urban India , ousted by crows and especially pigeons.
