Yoshio has made available a full panel of Duration-Matched Treasury Returns for the WRDS (TRACE) bond database (download the forthcoming RFS paper here: https://lnkd.in/gTEBtfGj). With this data, you can compute “duration-adjusted” corporate bond returns which removes the interest rate component of the return attributable to movements in the U.S. yield curve. Over the past 40-years, the vast majority of the total returns to investing in corporate bonds can be attributed to gains on long-term Treasury securities (duration) rather than compensation for credit and liquidity risk. Funnily enough, the cumulative return from holding the one-month U.S. T-Bill is greater than holding the credit component of the corp. bond market! Despite some initial positive outcomes, concerns about bad debts persist, leading many banks to propose extending the application period of Circular 02. Financial Instrument NIF: Note issuance facility. A note issuance facility (NIF) is a credit arrangement usually provided by a syndicate of commercial banks. Its structure can be used for all kinds of businesses as a vehicle for supporting the issuance of credit notes. It is most commonly used by companies wishing to raise capital in the European markets. NIFs are beneficial for borrowers because they allow them to issue notes with commercial bank backing on an as-needed basis. This can be helpful when credit note issuance is regularly used for funding. With a NIF, corporations don’t need to negotiate separate arrangements with each issuance.
