Yesterday, I had the privilege of facilitating my first workshop at Material since I joined. I covered Essentials of Facilitation Skills with a diverse group of participants. Reflections from the session: ✅ Preparation is everything. For most people, facilitation (and storytelling) is a practiced skill. ✅ Interactivity drives connection. This is especially true in remote-first organisations. ✅ Feedback is a powerful gift. Accept it with an open mind.

Facilitation is very different than training or consulting. There is an “art and science” to facilitating a discussion among a group working toward a mutual outcome. If you’ve never taken your HR team through such an exercise to upskill them — or if you as an individual is interested in learning the tools and techniques to facilitate, look to #inifac. It is well worth every penny you invest in it. #facilitation #processdesign

Something that makes many #workshopfacilitators and #trainers shudder, is when someone raises their hand, and starts a question with - "what if". I shared with my #groupfacilitationskills group this week how this happened all day last week from one of our #coachingconversations workshop participants. Every one of her questions started with "what if" - and there were so many of them that the whole group started to notice and enjoy them as much as me. Yes, I enjoy them. To me it signals that someone is an engaged learner where they are trying to work out how the model might fit into their world. And her world is quite different to a typical kiwi one. She's a senior leader from an ASEAN country in the government sector in what is traditionally a more hierachical structure. She was testing the idea that #coaching should be a conversation where the leader would #askonlyquestions in her own context. So whilst our first instinct might be that someone is challenging our ideas or the models we are sharing, a quick and helpful reframe is that they are merely trying to get their learning needs met. They frequently ask the question that others are thinking but for some reason, don't want to ask. Those questions can forward the outcomes of the whole group. They can be a real asset in the room.

⭐️What is the best facilitation training you know?⭐️ Have you done any facilitation training that has been transformation? Or are any particular branches of facilitation especially useful? I'm already sold on how crucial it is to creating a better future. I've done self study and led >50 meetings. Now I want something more substantial. I'm hoping it will be a helpful thread for ANYONE interested in growing in facilitation skills! Thanks! (You're welcome to suggest 'your' course but I'm especially wanted to get recommendations!)
