Since year 2000, I have observed that suspicion is a growing factor which leads to a discrepancy between facts and opinion participating to our construction of reality, driving our political choices. This generates bias and even disinformation. It is essential that we improve our communication in areas where we can enjoy honest conversations and indeed debate where we feel safe to express our views of reality where people can build trust and base their judgement on facts, neutrally. This is the essence that allows democracy to bring the chances for a better world and improved quality of life, away from propaganda (serving hidden agendas) and protect the citizens (serving justice). Transparency and the right to criticise are the base of the scientific method learned from the enlightenment, that has generated the technologies which we view as progress for the common good. Here is an article that explores this question where the justice system is the third power in need of its full independence to warrant that our qualities of life improve. https://lnkd.in/evEvJ2UP

As we approach the US 2024 Presidential Election, it is important to think more about political Deep Fakes. Deep Fakes are manipulated media, and they can easily place anyone into audio, a photo, or video. They can make that person appear to do things that they never did and would never do. AI can synthesize images more rapidly and expedite the Deep Fake creation process. Here is an article about California’s AB 2839 and AB 2655. These bills were signed into law by Newsom in September, 2024. AB 2839 prohibits the distribution, with malice, of campaign advertisements and other election-related communications that contain materially deceptive content. On the other hand, AB 2655 requires large online platforms to block the posting of election disinformation during specified periods before and after an election and to label certain additional content as inauthentic, fake, or false. The bill also requires these platforms to develop reporting procedures for such content. The interesting thing about these laws is that they have already faced legal challenges, and it is unclear whether they will survive careful scrutiny. When people advocate that governments or elites clamp down on misinformation and prevent us from seeing, reading, and hearing things they determine are false or harmful, they are effectively asking to be put back into their playpens. But who should be cast in the role of the adults in this scenario? To whom should we entrust the right to decide which speech is harmful? My latest for Quillette, with the mighty Adam Goldstein:
