Meet our patients and some of their needs! In this post we will discuss Maria's care and how we help others like her at the clinic.
At Camotan Clinic we busily see patients each day. Most cannot afford their medications or exams. While we have an increasing number of patients in the clinic each month, patients like Maria exemplify how we first started to help people in the village of Camotan.
Maria came to us many years ago, she was one of our first patients at the clinic and is a diabetic. Unfortunately in Guatemala the poverty is so great that individuals suffering with diabetes usually cannot afford their care or the medications they need to survive.
Many patients need insulin pills, and there is some government support available and they can sometimes get these pills. But for patients like Maria who need insulin because pills no longer work, diabetes is a death sentence. Pills had become ineffective for her and her blood sugars were consistently over 600 (this is not good; normal is between 70-180). Without treatment she would live a couple years at best.
We started Maria on insulin and 2 years later her blood sugars were running around 150-250; not perfect but because of the significant drop, many years have been added to her life and she is healthy and happy. Her insulin costs on average $30 per month.
We now have many other diabetics needing insulin supplies monthly. Most need about $30 a month to cover the cost for the insulin. If you are interested in donating or learning more about what we do at Camotan Clinic, please visit us at https://camotanclinic.com/
If you would like to make a donation specifically for insulin supplies simply note that in the Gift Designation box. Thank you for your continued support!

At Uber Health, we’re working to make taking care of your health simple and convenient for all. Today we’re thrilled to share the success of our pilot prescription delivery program in partnership with Sostento Inc, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and ScriptDrop—helping underserved communities access the prescriptions they need, when and where they need them.
During the pilot, providers at free and charitable clinics initiated prescription delivery for patients using the Uber Health dashboard. Clinics were located in Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. A pharmacy-agnostic approach ensured providers could get medications delivered from any participating pharmacy to a location convenient for the patient—home, work, or anywhere else.
The pilot concluded in Fall 2024. Clinicians and patients alike have provided positive feedback, noting how convenient delivery has improved the care experience. One recipient was able to receive her prescription while her husband was in the hospital, so she didn’t have to leave his side. Another recipient juggling 2 jobs without reliable transportation skipped the stress of a pharmacy trip thanks to prescription delivery. Clinics noted a user-friendly way to request deliveries and ensure prescriptions are delivered to those who need them most.
Prescription delivery has the power to improve medication adherence and reduce transportation as a barrier to care. To learn more about our prescription delivery product, get in touch here: https://ubr.to/3ZNG3l2.

💖 Have you taken a decision?
If not, watch the movie about Casper and think twice. You can help saving lives.
It's #DonationWeek, an annual campaign to raise awareness of organ donation and encourage more people to take a stand. We know that organ donation saves lives, and a single donor can save up to eight people.
Sweden has the highest willingness to donate in the world, with around 80% of the population in favor of donating their organs, but despite this, there is still a major organ shortage. In 2024 alone, more than 40 people have died or been removed from the waiting list due to a lack of available organs.
Casper Emilsson helped save lives last year. Casper passed away at the age of 24, but through his organ donation he was able to save the lives of five people.
🫶🏿 Currently, around 730 people are waiting for a new organ, a transplant that is the only chance of life without life-sustaining treatment. To be considered as an organ donor, a person must be in intensive care, on a ventilator and medically fit. These factors make organ donation a rare event, but when it happens it can make a huge difference. Artificial organs may provide alternatives to donated organs in the future, as they show great potential to meet global demand and reduce waiting times, although they still face technical challenges and questions around long-term sustainability.
Donated versus artificial organs differ in terms of availability, risks, technical challenges and long-term prospects. If we only look at access between the two, it looks like this:
🫶🏿 Organ donation is dependent on the availability of donor organs, which means that patients often have to wait a long time for a compatible organ. The shortage of donors means that many patients never get the organ they need.
🫶🏿 Artificial organs are being developed to be used on demand and taken off the shelf, potentially eliminating waiting times and reducing dependence on human donors. This is particularly important for hearts, where demand far exceeds supply.
